Re: SmartDVB 0.3.0 pre beta tests feedback thread
« Antwort #195 am: 22 Januar, 2013, 21:58 »
I have to report a little thing:
In my "Software"-List, there are about 9 Entries from SmartDVB ...
Confirmed.
On Win7, I have 14 right now.
All of those refer to the same install folder, so an individual uninstall would not work.

Means, I will CAREFULLY clean up the registry occasionally.
Please note, on the registry screen shot I have expanded several, but not all of the SmartDVB installer entries.

Basically, an update installation, that uses the same path as the last one, should not add yet another item to the software registration, but update or delete the latest existing entry, like to allow to display the new version number.

However, as you are changing the semi random ID on every update, it may be anything but easy, to clean this up automatically.

But from my point of view, this should better be solved (for the future), before an official release would be published.

Best regards

Jürgen

Re: SmartDVB 0.3.0 pre beta tests feedback thread
« Antwort #196 am: 24 Januar, 2013, 01:03 »
ok tx, i already knew this. This been introduced due to alteration to the ms install. Previous versions/installs would remove a previous product code if installed (when altering product code at ms install too it's considered a new product so old one would be deleted, no matter at what folder it's located i'm afraid that's how the ms installer operates). So if one disables the 'removeinstalledversion' then side by side installs r created. Not altering the product code at each test probably would also force u to delete previously installed product (coz that would be considered the same nd install would not proceed).  I don't see how this could easily be solved besides some major install alteration to for example copy the old product somewhere else before installer deletes it. Otherwise u'll get indeed odd results if one chooses the same install folder nd presumes the product would be upgraded (which is te default action of one chooses to not disable that option). Maybe for now the best would be to enable it again, if one wants to keep the previous version one would have to do a manual copy of al the files to some folder (sdvb should operate from there without issues, although new .ax components would be used etc).

Seems this is a limitation from the ms installer, would be too much to move now to a better install product (honestly it seems most people have griefs with that visual studio installer which makes some issues too difficult, tools like installshield r actually much better nd all this stuff's much more flexible, at previous times at jobs those were the tools, or something like wise also seems used, no exp with that). But by now i'm quite sure i'll probalby alter the install tool next version :)

br,
jack
ps: so i'll re-enable that option, which means installs at other folders would still remove older product in ms eyes, just mentioning that, otherwise this would get a neverending story :)

Could that installer try to find SmartDVB.exe in the install path (chosen), and if exists, automatically ask for update / repair / uninstall selection? Might be easier than fiddling around with Windows software controls.

Of course, the copy-elsewhere-to way is the best for backups of older versions, as long as no really important /possibly fatal registry entries are effected. And that's what I am doing anyway.

Re: SmartDVB 0.3.0 pre beta tests feedback thread
« Antwort #198 am: 27 Januar, 2013, 18:21 »
dunno if that's so simple to do, but i'll see about some backup at install initiation. This stuff all needs to be made custom, nd even funnier i mentioned my gripes with the ms visual studio installer, seems that MS's removed the installer from current visual studio 2012 release, which also seems kind of silly considering making such stuff 's quite n investment however you look at it (they even refer to some other tools amongst which that installshield which to some developers seems quite fishy too, it's quite odd such a decision which forces companies to alter stuff that's been invested at, lots won't even upgrade to 2012 coz of that, something which i would not have done soon at all btw coz i regret even the migration from vs2005 to 2010, cost too much time).

But these install alterations would need tsts coz you never should/r able to presume altered stuff would operate at other os'es (i've been fiddling with this doing tsts at xp entire weekend nd even at xp some stuff which just operates with w7 don't operate). For now i'll just backup the smartdvb.exe nd settings/transponders from previous install folder if, like you mention, smartdvb.exe's at install folder (nd also db's if there). So like that, if it operates, you'll at least at all times have copy of previous install .exe which should be enough for now coz the rest should just be copyable (also coz previous settings/db r not deleted by new install i made sure of that at previous times).

br,
jack
(nd btw: only registry entries used by sdvb r for the needed com (smartavsrc.ax etc) those would b the ones used from the most recent install (also by old app), so if those interfaces don't alter there's no issue (i just have to make sure of that, which is no issue just create new interfaces for new functionality but leave older interfaces available for  compatibility) coz other options etc r all .ini :) )

hi pm sent with current build. Aforementioned install fix (tries to make basic backup before install if smartdvb.exe etc's detected). This install stuff's getting quite operator intensive for me i must add:)
Also minor additions to smartosd (sosd status and messagebox for record messages which should also allow for remote operate messageboxes nd some slide tst for options/timeshift(enable at smartosd options)).
br,
jack

np jurgen no need to rush at all, i already found some issues due to some alteration (dvb titles lockup so if u encounter that or nybody here for that matter consider that solved, although i know the people here probably don't mind dvb titles which don't operate that well :)) Other then that i think i might put this out like beta 1 quick then, need to continue with some new additions.....

No issues on DVB subs found here.

The new backup routine also seems to work well.

BTW, by pure accident I've just discovered mouse gesture style controls on SmartOSD TTX, by dragging on the TTX area with left mouse key pressed.
Up and down works for sub page control, left and right for page control.

In my eyes, the time for a public beta may indeed have come now.
Keep in mind, a beta version does not have to be perfect.
But indeed it is pretty close already.

Best regards

Jürgen

At start I get a sign with a question mark on the screen ... it disappears after a view seconds.

Edit: Disregard - it's the deleting of the old EPG entries ... with the new version it gets explained ...
