Auf die Helioseal-Laufwerke der Serie He6 lässt HGST die He8 mit 8 oder 6 TByte folgen und kündigt 10-TByte-Laufwerke mit Shingled Magnetic Recording an.

Die schon 2013 angekündigte 6-TByte-Festplatten der Baureihe He6 liefert HGST nun seit einigen Monaten aus. Sie haben das Preisniveau der konkurrierenden Laufwerke erreicht: Im Vergleich zu billigeren 6-TByte-Platten drehen sie mit höherer Dehzahl und sind mit maximal einem unkorrigierbaren Lesefehler pro 10 hoch 15 gelesene Bits spezifiziert – bei den billigeren Platten ist eine maximale Fehlerwahrscheinlichkeit von 10 hoch -14 üblich. Nun legt HGST bei diesen "Enterprise Capacity"-Laufwerken nach und stellt die Baureihe He8 mit 6 oder 8 TByte Kapazität auf sieben Scheiben (Platters) vor. Die Platten gibt es in zahlreichen Varianten mit SATA-6G- oder SAS-12G-Schnittstellen, mit unterschiedlichen und teilweise konfigurierbaren Sektorgrößen sowie mit Verschlüsselungsfunktionen. Ausgeliefert werden derzeit noch keine Serienstückzahlen, sondern Muster an Pilotkunden zur Qualifikation.

Außerdem kündigt HGST eine 10-TByte-Platte an, die aber wohl erst an wenige Pilotkunden geht. Hier kommt ertsmals bei HGST Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) zum Einsatz, und zwar im Verbund mit der Heliumfüllung. SMR steigert zwar die Kapazität, schränkt aber die sinnvollen Nutzungsarten ein, weil das Überschreiben bereits befüllter, einander überlappender Datenspuren zu hohen Latenzen führen kann. Daher empfiehlt HGST die 10 TB SMR Helioseal vor allem für Cloud-Datengräber und Cold Storage – also für Anwendungen, wo Daten selten überschrieben werden, aber möglichst viel Kapazität pro Watt und Euro verlangt wird.

Für die He8 mit 8 TByte, die mit 7200 Touren dreht, nennt HGST eine Leistungsaufnahme von 5,1 Watt im Leerlauf und 7,4 Watt bei Zugriffen (SAS 12G: 5,7/9,1 Watt). Das ist weniger als bei anderen 7200-Touren-Platten mit 6 TByte und laut HGST ein Vorteil der Heliumfüllung.

Die He8 ist mit dem sogenannten Media Cache ausgestattet, der Schreibzugriffe auf zufällig verteilte Adressen deutlich beschleunigt, indem er sie zunächst in einem gesonderten Bereich puffert und in späteren Phasen geringer Nutzung in die endgültigen Sektoren verschiebt. Die Technik wurde ursprünglich ersonnen, um einige Nachteile der SMR-Technik zu kompensieren.

Wie für die He6 und andere Enterprise-Platten gewährt HGST für die He8 fünf Jahre Garantiefrist.

Partition Logic is a free hard disk partitioning and data management tool. It can create, delete, format, defragment, resize, and move partitions and modify their attributes. It can copy entire hard disks from one to another. It is based on the Visopsys operating system. It boots from a CD or floppy disk and runs as a standalone system, independent of your regular operating system. Fixed: In the computer browser, when clicking to mount a CD-ROM for the first time, from a cold boot, the file browser that was launched sometimes wouldn't start in the CD-ROM's mount directory.
Fixed: In the file browser and the file dialog, the current directory field started off disabled (greyed-out), but changing the directory caused it to be redrawn as enabled (not greyed out). Components weren't being re-rendered when their setData() functions were called.
Fixed: A bug in the USB driver subsystem, in which a device disconnection could cause the USB thread to go into an infinite loop.
Fixed: Increased timeout values for SCSI 'start unit' commands, to support various USB-attached disks (hard disks and CD/DVD drives that need time to spin up).
Fixed: An IDE disk controller driver bug where an unhandled interrupt could result from selecting a nonexistent slave drive on certain controllers. Also eliminated some redundant status polling.
Fixed: Timing issues in the AHCI SATA driver related to CD/DVD drives.
Fixed: Removed kernelMalloc() usage in kernelDebug.c which could cause debugging output not to be displayed in an interrupt context.

HDHacker is a stand-alone micro-util that saves, visualizes, restores the MBR (from a physical drive), the BootSector (from a logical drive) or any sector from a disk too. An MBR and BootSector backup can be useful for simple precautionary purposes, in fact sometimes viruses or other SO (Linux) setup could overwrite them and/or alter them, making it impossible to start up previous SO and/or have access to data stored on the disk.
