In einem Analystengespräch sagte der Seagate-Chef, dass in diesem Quartal erste Muster einer 12-TByte-Festplatte an Pilotkunden ausgeliefert werde. Zunächst aber steigt die Modellvielfalt bei den 10-TByte-Versionen – nicht nur bei Seagate.

Füllt man eine Festplatte nicht mit Luft, sondern mit Helium, kann man eine weitere Scheibe einbauen und damit die Kapazität erhöhen. Solche Festplatten hatte HGST vor mehr als zwei Jahren vorgestellt, lange Zeit war das Unternehmen damit allein auf dem Markt. Erst im Januar stellte Seagate seine erste Helium-Festplatte vor – und dann gleich mit einer Kapazität von 10 TByte.

Das Unternehmen scheint viel Vertrauen in die Technik zu haben: In einem Finanzgespräch versprach Seagte-Chef Steve Luczo, dass sein Unternehmen noch in diesem Quartal Helium-Festplatten mit 12 TByte an Pilotkunden ausliefern werde. Weitere Details nannte er jedoch nicht.

10-TByte-Festplatten von HGST und Seagate

Konkret kündigen die Festplattenhersteller WD und Seagate erst einmal weitere Helium-Modelle mit 10 TByte Kapazität an. WD bringt ein neues Modell aus seiner Rechenzentrums-Serie: Die WD Gold (WD101KRYZ) hat 10 TByte Kapazität, eine Helium-Füllung und mit 256 MByte Cache die doppelte Menge des 8-TByte-Modells aus der gleichen Serie. Sie wird bereits für rund 750 Euro gelistet.

Seagate hat vor kurzem gleich drei Helium-Festplatten mit dieser Kapazität vorgestellt: Barracuda Pro, Ironwulf und Skyhawk. Die Skyhawk soll für Spezialanwendungen wie Videoaufzeichnung geeignet sein, die Ironwulf ist eine klassische NAS-Festplatte. Hinter der Barracuda Pro verbirgt sich tatsächlich eine Desktop-Festplatte mit 10 TByte. Die Ironwulf (ST10000VN0004) ist aktuell bei einigen Händlern bereits für rund 440 Euro erhältlich, die Barracuda Pro (ST10000DM0004) für knapp 520 Euro ebenfalls. Zur Verfügbarkeit der Skyhawk (ST10000VX0004) gibt es noch keine Angaben, die Angebote der Händler liegen bei rund 450 Euro.
