HGST bringt wie angekündigt eine Helium-Festplatte mit 10 TByte Kapazität in den Handel. Die Überraschung daran: Sie nutzt nicht das kapazitätssteigernde Aufzeichnungsverfahren SMR.

Nicht nur SSDs erreichen immer höhere Kapazitäten, sondern auch Festplatten: HGST stellt die Ultrastar He10 vor, eine Helium-gefüllte Festplatte mit 10 TByte Bruttokapazität. Eine Helium-Platte mit dieser Kapazität hatte das Unternehmen bereits vor einigen Monaten in Aussicht gestellt, allerdings sollte diese Ha10 genannte Festplatte mit dem kapazitätssteigernden Aufzeichnungsverfahren SMR (Shingled Magnetic Recording) arbeiten. Das heute vorgestellte Laufwerk hingegen nutzt das konventionelle PMR, Perpendicular Magnetic Recording.

Die weiteren technischen Daten ähneln dem SMR-Laufwerk: Die Platten drehen mit 7200 Umdrehungen, haben einen Cache von 256 MByte und eine UER (Unrecoverable Error Rate) von 10-15. Die He10 hat wahlweise eine SATA- und SAS-Schnittstelle. Die SAS-Modelle sind wie gewohnt nicht nur mit Sektorgrößen von 512 und 4096 Byte erhältlich, sondern für spezielle Einsatzszenarien auch mit 520, 528 sowie 4112, 4160 und 4224 Byte; die SATA-Modelle lediglich mit 512 und 4096 Byte (4Kn). HGST gibt eine voraussichtliche jährliche Ausfallrate von 0,35 Prozent an, die He10 soll im Mittel jedoch 2,5 Millionen Stunden halten (MTBF, Mean Time Between Failure). HGST gibt fünf Jahre Garantie. Die sequenziellen Transferraten liegen laut Hersteller bei 237 MByte/s beim Lesen, beim Schreiben sind es 215 MByte/s.

Sieben statt sechs Scheiben

Das Edelgas Helium hat eine deutlich geringere Dichte als Luft. Turbulenzen nehmen ab und auch unerwünschte Strömungseffekte im Gehäuse verringern sich. So kann HGST statt sechs Scheiben (Platters) wie bei Laufwerken ähnlicher Größe sieben einbauen. Da auch die auf den Motor wirkenden Kräfte durch das Helium geringer sind, sinkt die Leistungsaufnahme pro Platter. HGST wirbt bei der He10 unter anderem mit einer bis zu 56 Prozent bessseren Leistungseffizienz gegenüber luftgefüllten 8-TByte-Festplatten, bezogen auf die Leistungsaufnahme pro TByte Speicherkapazität.

Die 10-TByte-SMR-Laufwerke Ultrastar Ha10 sind nach Angaben von HGST derzeit lediglich bei solchen Kunden im Einsatz, die "volle Kontrolle über ihren Softwarestack haben und damit hohe und stabile Datendurchsätze erzielen können" – sprich, ihre Anwendungen auf das vergleichsweise langsame Schreiben bei SMR-Festplatten angepasst haben. Es würden sicher noch einige Monate vergehen, bis der dazu notwendige "Host-managed"-SMR-Support größere Verbreitung gefunden hat – erst danach mache es Sinn, den nächsten SMR-Kapazitätspunkt zu verkünden. HGST will auf lange Sicht mehrgleisig fahren: PMR für universellen Einsatz und SMR für maximale Kapazität, beispielsweise in Archivanwendungen.

Auch Seagate setzt für immer größere Festplatten nun auf eine Helium-Füllung. Die Festplatte aus der Enterprise-Capacity-Serie speichert damit 10 TByte Daten.

Das Edelgas Helium setzt sich als eine Möglichkeit zur Kapazitätserhöhung von Festplatten durch. Einige Helium-Festplatten sind bereits von HGST erhältlich, nun bringt auch Seagate eine Festplatte mit Helium- statt Luft-Füllung. Die Enterprise Capacity HDD fasst 10 TByte; sie soll nach Herstellerangaben besonders leicht sein und besonders wenig Energie verbrauchen.

Durch die Helium-Füllung sinken die Turbulenzen im Gehäuse, und auch unerwünschte Strömungseffekte verringern sich. So kann eine einzelne Scheibe etwas dünner ausfallen; damit ist Platz für eine weitere. Insgesamt sieben Platters verbaut Seagate in der Enterprise Capacity HDD, ebenso wie HGST in seinen Helium-gefüllten Modellen.

Angaben zu Umdrehungsgeschwindigkeit und Cache macht das Unternehmen nicht, die Platte dürfte jedoch wahrscheinlich mit 7200-1 drehen und 256 MByte Speicher besitzen. Sie ist dauerlaufgeeignet, mit SAS- oder SATA-Anschluss lieferbar und weist eine MTBF von 2,5 Millionen Stunden auf. Im Handel ist die Platte derzeit noch nicht erhältlich, nach Angaben von Seagate wird sie derzeit lediglich an ausgewählte Kunden ausgeliefert.

SMR-Festplatte mit 8 TByte

Weiterhin hat Seagate eine neue luftgefüllte Festplatte mit 8 TByte Kapazität vorgestellt. Die NAS HDD ST8000VN000 ist für kleinere Speichersysteme mit bis zu 8 Festplatten spezifiziert. Sie arbeitet anders als die kürzlich vorgestellten höherwertigen Modelle mit Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR), ist also beim Schreiben von Daten mit zufälligem Zugriffsmuster recht langsam. Laut Datenblatt arbeitet auch das 6-TByte-Modell aus der NAS-Serie mit SMR. Die 8 TByte-Festplatte soll demnächst im Handel verfügbar sein, der Preis dürfte um die 440 Euro liegen.

- The "Bytes Written" field on the Device tab, should be better at pulling the data from the most precise attribute.
- Submit: Fixed an issue with malformed JSON data under certain circumstances, causing the submission to fail.
- Device Tab: Added "SATA Speed" in the balloon tooltip for the Interface field.
- Device Tab: Added "WorldWideName" in the balloon tooltip for the Device Name field.
