HDHacker is a stand-alone micro-util that saves, visualizes, restores the MBR (from a physical drive), the BootSector (from a logical drive) or any sector from a disk too. An MBR and BootSector backup can be useful for simple precautionary purposes, in fact sometimes viruses or other SO (Linux) setup could overwrite them and/or alter them, making it impossible to start up previous SO and/or have access to data stored on the disk.

DiskSpd is geared towards IT users who need to diagnose and analyze storage-based performance issues. Anyone can use this program, of course, but it really was designed for servers and IT departments. You will need to be familiar with using the command prompt and typing in proper switches and output to get the desired tests.

Here's an example command that runs a test for 15 seconds using a single thread to drive 100% random 4KiB reads at a depth of 10 overlapped (outstanding) I/Os to a regular file:

"diskspd -d15 -F1 -w0 -r -b4k -o10 c:\testfile.dat"


While the documentation says it's only been tested on Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8 we were able to run it on Windows 7 so we suspect it should run under most versions of Windows.

There is a firmware update available for the Intel SSD 540s, E5400s Series and the Intel SSD DC S3100 Series products. This release of the Intel SSD Toolbox will detect if user’s drive is eligible for the firmware update and directs them to use the Intel SSD Firmware Update Tool.
For the Intel SSD 540s Series, the latest firmware revision is 031C.
For the Intel SSD E 5400s Series, the latest firmware revision is 031E.
For the Intel SSD DC S3100 Series, the latest firmware revision is 031D.
