Aktuelle Version korrigiert Sicherheitslücken

Mit der Version 1.1.16 werden mindestens zwei Sicherheitslücken in der Browsersuite SeaMonkey beseitigt. Im schlimmsten Fall lassen sich die Fehler zum Ausführen von Schadcode missbrauchen. Neue Funktionen bringt SeaMonkey 1.1.16 nicht.
In der Updatebeschreibung zu SeaMonkey 1.1.16 heißt es, dass die Version die jüngsten Änderungen an Firefox integriert. Zuletzt erschien mit Firefox 3.0.8 ein Sicherheitsupdate, das zwei als gefährlich einzustufende Sicherheitslücken beseitigt. Beide Fehler können zur Ausführung von Schadcode missbraucht werden.

Die Übersichtsseite der Security Advisories für SeaMonkey wurde noch nicht aktualisiert. Daher liegen keine genauen Angaben vor, welche Sicherheitslücken die neue SeaMonkey-Version im Detail beseitigt.

Wenige Wochen nach der Freigabe von Firefox 3.5 folgt die erste Beta von SeaMonkey 2.0. Dieses freie Programm ist der Nachfolger des alten Netscape und der Mozilla-Websuite, die noch Browser, Mail-Client und Newsreader in einem waren.

Im Innern arbeitet dieselbe Browser-Engine wie in Firefox 3.5.1, samt Sicherheitsupdates und HTML-5-Funktionen wie Audio/Video-Elemente, schnelleres JavaScript und lokale Datenspeicherung. Den Download-Manager haben die Seamonkey-Entwickler so überarbeitet, dass er nun abgebrochene Downloads auch nach einem Browser-Neustart wieder aufnimmt. Im Browser gibt es eine Vorschau der abonnierten RSS-Feeds, und alternativ zum eingebauten RSS-Reader lassen sich andere auswählen. Ähnlich wie Thunderbird 3 bietet die neue Seamonkey-Version eine Funktion zum Archivieren von E-Mails an.

Die Browsersuite Seamonkey steht nun in der Version 1.1.18 bereit und korrigiert zwei Sicherheitslücken. Ein Fehler in den SSL-Funktionen wurde bereits in Firefox und Thunderbird beseitigt. Ansonsten wurden kleinere Fehler korrigiert, neue Funktionen gibt es nicht.
Bei der Behandlung von Domainnamen in SSL-Zertifikaten kommt es zu einem Fehler in Seamonkey. Durch unterschiedliche Zeichenverarbeitung zwischen Client und Server kann es Angreifern gelingen, beliebige Zertifikate auszustellen und so beispielsweise Phishing zu betreiben (Mozilla Foundation Security Advisory 2009-42).

Ein weiterer Fehler betrifft das Parsen regulärer Ausdrücke in Zertifikaten und wurde nun auch in Seamonkey beseitigt (Mozilla Foundation Security Advisory 2009-43). Bereits Anfang August 2009 wurden diese Fehler in Firefox korrigiert und vor rund zwei Wochen zog auch Thunderbird nach.

Die Mozilla-Entwickler haben die zweite Beta der Internet-Suite SeaMonkey 2.0 freigegeben. Der Nachfolger des alten Netscape Communicator besteht aus einem Webbrowser auf dem Stand von Firefox 3.5.3, einem E-Mail- und News-Reader, einem IRC-Client und einem HTML-Editor.

Zu den Neuerungen gehört die Möglichkeit, im Mailer einzelne Nachrichten, Ordner und Accounts in Tabs zu öffnen. Versehentlich geschlossene Browser-Fenster lassen sich wiederherstellen. Weitere Neuerungen nennt das Change Log. Laut den Entwicklern sind mit der Beta 2 alle für SeaMonkey 2.0 geplanten Features implementiert. Die fertige Version soll im nächsten Monat erscheinen.

Die Entwickler des Projekts Seamonkey haben den ersten Release Candidate der Version 2.0 ihrer Websuite zum Download bereit gestellt. Die Software mit Web-Browser, Mail-Client und Newsreader ist für Windows, Mac OS X und Linux auch auf Deutsch erhältlich. Insgesamt ist Seamonkey 2.0rc1 in 18 Sprachen verfügbar. Die Entwickler weisen darauf hin, dass die Vorabversion nur für Testzwecke gedacht ist.

Seamonkey 2.0rc1 arbeitet mit der selben Browser-Engine wie der aktuelle Firefox, also mit Sicherheitsupdates und HTML-5-Funktionen wie Audio/Video-Elemente, schnellerem JavaScript und lokaler Datenspeicherung. Der Download-Manager kann abgebrochene Downloads auch nach einem Browser-Neustart wieder aufnehmen. Im Browser gibt es eine Vorschau der abonnierten RSS-Feeds. What's New in SeaMonkey 2.0

SeaMonkey 2.0 contains the following major changes relative to SeaMonkey 1.1.18:

    * SeaMonkey uses the same internal platform as Firefox 3.5.4 now. Due to this change SeaMonkey is now much closer to Firefox as far as user profiles, add-ons and functionality of user interface elements are concerned.
    * The default location of user profiles has changed. Legacy profiles, e.g. from SeaMonkey 1.x, or even Thunderbird profiles, can be migrated automatically, excluding third-party add-ons (extensions and themes). The old profile will not be touched (instead, copies are made).
    * The new Add-on Manager allows to install, update, disable and remove extensions (add-ons), themes and plugins using the same mechanisms Firefox uses. This should ease extension management and development considerably.
    * Session restore (crash recovery) has been added. Now, when SeaMonkey crashes, all your browser windows and tabs will be restored automatically or on request (including data entered in web forms!). In addition, users can select to always restore the browser windows and tabs from their last open session when starting SeaMonkey.
    * Reopening closed browser windows (Undo Close Window) is now possible.
    * History is now stored in a better database solution, so that it can easily keep more information, and the location bar determines which addresses to autocomplete and/or show in the drop down menu with a smarter algorithm based on what you type, searching in both URL and title of visited pages by default.
    * Toolbars in the browser, main MailNews and message compose windows are now fully customizable, including icon size and whether to display icons and/or text for every major toolbar, all available via their context menus.
    * The MailNews component now includes support for reading RSS and Atom feeds. The browser detects feeds offered by web pages, can preview them and offers different ways to subscribe to them. For subscribing to the feed in the MailNews component, an account for feeds needs to already be created there.
    * New IMAP accounts will now keep local offline copies by default, as a part of a number of speed improvements when working with IMAP. Synchronization can be disabled per account or for individual folders, and limited to the most recent messages in the Synchronization & Storage settings.
    * Tabbed Mail enables accounts, folders and even single messages to be opened in tabs inside the Mail & Newsgroups window. This feature also enables the Lightning extension to be installed into SeaMonkey for calendering functionality.
    * Password Manager was switched to an improved version, allowing easier searching, and notification bars replacing modal dialogs for remembering logins.
    * Download Manager has been completely reworked, including support for cross-session resumable downloads.
    * A new form manager replaces all previous web form management, and automatically keeps a record of what you type into forms and presents you these options in a drop-down list when you come back.
    * Cookie Manager has been improved and now allows searching for cookies by site and cookie name.
    * Gecko, the rendering engine used in SeaMonkey, has seen many improvements since the version used in the last stable release. Changes range from a better graphics backend (Cairo/Thebes) to improved support for fonts, CSS, DOM and JavaScript. SeaMonkey 2.0 passes the Acid2 test and most of Acid3 and includes all the HTML5 and other new web-facing features also included in Firefox 3.5, such as audio/video elements, downloadable fonts and JIT-compiled JavaScript.
    * Most of the icons in the default theme have been exchanged for newer images that fit better with the look of modern desktop environments.
    * The default theme on Mac OS X was completely renewed to better fit with the look of Leopard and Snow Leopard.
    * For extension developers, SMILE is introduced, making interfaces known from FUEL and STEEL also available in SeaMonkey.
    * Support for Windows 95, 98, Me and NT 4 was dropped. GTK 2.10 or higher is now required on Linux/UNIX. Support for Mac OS X 10.3 ("Panther") and 10.2 ("Jaguar") was also dropped.

Die Browsersuite Seamonkey steht in der Version 2.0 bereit und basiert nun auf Firefox 3.5.4. Damit erhält Seamonkey eine schnellere und bessere Rendering Engine, bringt aber auch viele Verbesserungen bei der Nutzung der Browsersuite.

Der Browserverlauf wird nun wie in einer Datenbank abgelegt, so dass sich besuchte Webseiten leichter finden lassen. Mittels automatischer Vervollständigung zeigt das Adressfeld in Seamonkey 2.0 aufgerufene Webseiten, so dass dem Nutzer Tipparbeit abgenommen wird. Falls Seamonkey 2.0 einmal abstürzt, restauriert die Software alle geöffneten Browsertabs inklusive der in Browser-Formularen enthaltenen Daten, versprechen die Seamonkey-Macher.

Einmal geschlossene Browserfenster kann Seamonkey nun bequem wieder öffnen, und die Browsersuite besitzt einen verbesserten Kennwort-Manager, der nicht mehr durch lästige Popups stört, sondern sich wie bei Firefox dezent in die Oberfläche einbindet. Dadurch wird der Anwender weniger stark beim Surfen gestört. Der komplett neu entwickelte Downloadmanager kann nun Downloads sessionübergreifend fortsetzen und die Cookie-Verwaltung hat eine Suchfunktion erhalten.

Der neue Formular-Manager in Seamonkey 2.0 speichert automatisch alle Eingaben, die in Browser-Formularen getätigt wurden, so dass diese in einer Drop-Down-Liste erscheinen und bequem eingefügt werden können. Generell lassen sich alle Werkzeugleisten im Browser und im E-Mail-Client komplett nach Belieben verändern, um den Browser nach den eigenen Wünschen anzupassen.

Seamonkey hat eine Feedvorschau erhalten und kann Feeds im E-Mail-Bereich verwalten. Der E-Mail-Client von Seamonkey 2.0 unterstützt Tabs, die in Konten, E-Mail-Verzeichnissen und einzelnen Nachrichten zur Verfügung stehen. Damit lässt sich auch die Kalendererweiterung Lightning nutzen. Generell wurde die Nutzung von IMAP-Postfächern überarbeitet, so ist nun eine komplette Offline-Nutzung möglich. Zudem soll es eine Reihe von Geschwindigkeitsverbesserungen gegeben haben.

Durch den Einsatz der Rendering Engine aus Firefox 3.5.4 beherrscht Seamonkey nun den Acid2-Test und in großen Teilen auch den Acid3-Test. Die Browsersuite hat einen Add-on-Manager erhalten, um von zentraler Stelle Themes, Plug-ins und andere Erweiterungen zu verwalten. Das Standard-Theme auf Systemen für MacOS wurde überarbeitet, so dass sich die Software besser in die Versionen Leopard und Snow Leopard von MacOS einfügt.

Nachdem die Mozilla-Suite eingestellt und das Projekt in Firefox und Thunderbird aufgeteilt wurde, übernahm SeaMonkey die Aufgabe, unter anderem Browser, E-Mail-Client und Chatprogramm in einem Paket anzubieten. Seamonkey verwendet als Basis Firefox 3.5.4 und ist um einen E-Mail-Client, eine Newsgroup-Software und einen rudimentären HTML-Editor erweitert.

SeaMonkey 2.1 Alpha 1 contains the following major changes relative to SeaMonkey 2.0.5:

    * Better performance on startup and shutdown, as well as for JavaScript.
    * Protection from out-of-date plugins has been implemented.
    * HTML5 video can be played in full screen.
    * Resizeable text areas in web forms.
