Im Add-on-Katalog von Firefox schlummern noch alte Erweiterungen, die der Browser gar nicht mehr unterstützt. Im Herbst will Mozilla sie rausschmeißen.

Es ist das Ende einer Ära: Mozilla hat angekündigt, alle veralteten Legacy-Erweiterungen für den Firefox-Browser aus dem Add-on-Verzeichnis zu entfernen. Noch listet addons.mozilla.org (auch bekannt als AMO) neben den neuen WebExtensions alle möglichen Add-ons, Themes und andere Inhalte auf, die von neuen Firefox-Versionen aber nicht mehr unterstützt werden. Firefox ESR 52.x ist momentan der einzige Browser, der Legacy-Add-ons akzeptiert – dessen Support endet jedoch am 5. September. Alle anderen Versionen (inklusive der Beta- und Nightly-Builds) akzeptieren nur noch WebExtensions.

Nach dem 6. September ist es nicht mehr möglich, Legacy-Add-ons auf addons.mozilla.org einzustellen. Im Oktober will Mozilla diese dann "deaktivieren". "Sobald das passiert ist, können Benutzer die Erweiterung auf AMO nicht mehr finden", erklärt Caitlin Neiman im offiziellen Mozilla-Blog. Nach der Deaktivierung können die Entwickler ihre Erweiterungen auch weiterhin auf die WebExtension-APIs portieren. Wenn die neue Version im AMO eingereicht wird, erhalten die Firefox-Nutzer das Update automatisch. Weitere Hinweise zur Portierung hat Mozilla in den MDN Web Docs notiert.

WebExtensions-Umstieg verärgerte Entwickler

Mit der Veröffentlichung von Firefox 57 ("Quantum") war Mozilla von seinem klassischen Add-on-System auf WebExtensions umgestiegen. Sie unterstützen die Multi-Prozess-Architektur des Browsers, was das Arbeitstempo beschleunigt. Die veralteten XPCOM- und XUL-Schnittstellen schaltete Mozilla ab.

Der Umstieg hatte Add-on-Entwickler zunächst verärgert: Plötzlich waren ihre Erweiterungen kaputt. Betroffen war etwa das populäre Add-on NoScript, von dem es inzwischen aber eine "Quantum"-Version gibt. Chrome und Edge setzen ebenfalls auf WebExtensions.
