Mit der Veröffentlichung einer ersten Alphaversion von µTorrent 2.1 unterstützt Bittorrents schlanker Client nun auch Streaming. Videos können so schon während des Herunterladens wiedergegeben werden.
Derzeit steht µTorrent 2.1 in einer frühen Alphaversion unter dem Codenamen Falcon zum Download bereit, die bereits Ausblick auf einige neue Funktionen des beliebten Bittorrent-Clients bietet. Die Fertigstellung ist für das erste Quartal 2010 angepeilt.

Neu in µTorrent 2.1 ist die Streaming-Unterstützung. Damit wird es möglich, Videoinhalte, die per Bittorrent übertragen werden, wiederzugeben, noch während der Download läuft. So müssen nicht erst mehrere hundert MByte heruntergeladen werden, sondern der Film spielt bereits kurz nach dem Beginn des Downloads. Zur Wiedergabe kann dabei ein beliebiger Mediaplayer verwendet werden.

Darüber hinaus soll Falcon die Möglichkeit schaffen, ohne Konfiguration von überall auf den eigenen Client auf sicherem Weg zuzugreifen. Der optional nutzbare Dienst macht einen µTorrent-Client erreichbar, so dass Nutzer von diesem Dateien herunterladen können. Dafür wird lediglich ein Browser benötigt, die Kommunikation wird über Proxys des Anbieters abgewickelt, aber durchgehend mit HTTPS verschlüsselt. So hat auch der Proxybetreiber keinen Einblick in die Daten.

µTorrent erhält auch Unterstützung für Bittorrent DNA, einen Dienst von Bittorrent, der es Inhalteanbietern erlaubt, eigene Inhalte per Bittorrent zu verteilen und dies mit eigenen Servern zu unterstützen.

Hinzu kommen weitere kleine Verbesserungen im Userinterface, neue Sicherheitsfunktionen und eine verbesserte Browserintegration.

FrostWire is an peer-to-peer file sharing program for the Gnutella and BitTorrent protocols. FrostWire is written in Java, and is a fork of LimeWire, another popular Gnutella client. The project was started in September 2005 by members of the LimeWire open-source community, after LimeWire's distributor considered placing "blocking" code, which it was developing in response to RIAA pressure and the threat of legal action, in light of the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in MGM Studios, Inc. v. Grokster, Ltd. When eventually activated, the code could block its users from sharing licensed files. FrostWire was first released in October 2005.

As with Limewire, FrostWire is written in Java, and so is capable of supporting multiple platforms. LimeWire is available in both free and paid versions, while FrostWire is released only as a free version. The FrostWire program includes all of the free LimeWire version's functionality, plus a few features of LimeWire Pro's fee based upgrade. FrostWire also provides a chatroom which is absent in LimeWire. FrostWire's interface is nearly identical to that of LimeWire's since it's based on the same code base, however, the color scheme is slightly different as is shown in the picture above. As in LimeWire, the FrostWire skin may also be changed to a variety of different colors.
