FrostWire is an peer-to-peer file sharing program for the Gnutella and BitTorrent protocols. FrostWire is written in Java, and is a fork of LimeWire, another popular Gnutella client. The project was started in September 2005 by members of the LimeWire open-source community, after LimeWire's distributor considered placing "blocking" code, which it was developing in response to RIAA pressure and the threat of legal action, in light of the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in MGM Studios, Inc. v. Grokster, Ltd. When eventually activated, the code could block its users from sharing licensed files. FrostWire was first released in October 2005.

As with Limewire, FrostWire is written in Java, and so is capable of supporting multiple platforms. LimeWire is available in both free and paid versions, while FrostWire is released only as a free version. The FrostWire program includes all of the free LimeWire version's functionality, plus a few features of LimeWire Pro's fee based upgrade. FrostWire also provides a chatroom which is absent in LimeWire. FrostWire's interface is nearly identical to that of LimeWire's since it's based on the same code base, however, the color scheme is slightly different as is shown in the picture above. As in LimeWire, the FrostWire skin may also be changed to a variety of different colors.

Die Firma BitTorrent Inc. hat gestern die erste Betaversion ihres neuen Clients Project Chrysalis veröffentlicht. Damit ist es möglich, Dateien auf den Servern des Unternehmens hochzuladen und diese Freunden zugänglich zu machen, ohne das man dafür selbst online sein muss. Projekt Chrysalis bindet darüber hinaus auch Funktionen von sozialen Netzwerken mit ein.

Was die BitTorrent Inc. vorhat, ist eine Mischung aus einem One-Click Hoster, einem P2P-Client und einem Programm für soziale Netzwerke. Angemeldete User können Dateien auf den Servern des Unternehmens hochladen, um diese Freunden zugänglich zu machen. Den Kontakten werden die Daten im sogenannten "Content Channel" angezeigt. Die entsprechenden Links können per E-Mail, Twitter oder Facebook verbreitet werden. Wer den Link aufruft, wird eingeladen das Programm zu installieren und bekommt automatisch die Inhalte seiner Freunde angezeigt, die er auf Wunsch herunterladen kann. Der Download wird über das BitTorrent-Protokoll realisiert. Die Archive verbleiben für 30 Tage auf den Servern, bevor sie automatisch gelöscht werden. Wer an einem Transfer beteiligt ist, wird automatisch auch zum Anbieter der Datei. In kleinen sozialen Netzwerken können Uploads auch diskutiert werden.

Bislang ist der neue Client nur für Windows verfügbar. Ein Firmensprecher gab bekannt, das Unternehmen möchte das Programm so bald wie möglich neben dem regulären Client zum zweiten großen Produkt der Firma etablieren. Man wird sehen, wie die Nutzer dieses neue Konzept aufnehmen werden.

Die Mischung aus Filehoster und dem Download via P2P wurde erstmals im Jahr 2007 vom französischen Dienst VIPeers realisiert. Zwei Jahre später arbeitete man auch für den niederländischen P2P-Indexdienst MiniNova. Im Sommer 2009 musste VIPeers bereits wieder ihr Angebot einstellen. Auch auf das US-amerikanische Unternehmen dürften einige juristische Probleme zukommen. Da der Dienst ähnlich wie das Angebot von RapidShare und anderen Filehostern funktioniert, dürften die Rechteinhaber künftig ihren Druck erhöhen. Vielleicht deshalb gab man schon jetzt bekannt, dass sich an der Speicherfrist von 30 Tagen nichts ändern werde.
