Project Photofly 2.0 heißt ein Cloud-basiertes System von Autodesk, welches es ermöglicht, aus normalen Digitalfotos hochaufgelöste 3D-Modelle zu erstellen. Diese können anschließend auch auf einen 3D-Drucker ausgeben werden.

Project Photofly besteht aus der Software Photo Scene Editor und einer Cloud-Anwendung. Zunächst fotografiert der Nutzer ein Objekt von allen Seiten, etwa eine Skulptur oder den Kopf eines Menschen. Dazu kann jede beliebige Digitalkamera eingesetzt werden. Die Fotos lädt er in den Photo Scene Editor, der die Bilder auf die Cloud-Server überträgt, wo sie zu einem 3D-Modell zusammengesetzt werden. Der Nutzer kann auf das Ergebnis warten oder sich einen Downloadlink per E-Mail schicken lassen. Anschließend besteht die Möglichkeit, das 3D-Bild zu bearbeiten, etwa eventuell verzerrte Winkel auszugleichen oder störende Details wegzuretuschieren.

Triangulation

Das System berechnet zunächst die Position, von der aus ein Foto aufgenommen wurde. Dazu vergleicht es die verschiedenen Ansichten unterschiedlicher charakteristischer Details auf den Bilder und bestimmt dann per Triangulation die Kamerapositionen. Im nächsten Schritt wird dann anhand der verschiedenen Blickwinkel eine 3D-Ansicht aller auf den Bildern sichtbaren Gegenstände erzeugt.

Das 3D-Modell kann als ganz einfaches Gittermodell oder mit der realen Oberfläche ausgegeben werden. Der Nutzer kann die Datei in einem Viewer betrachten, er kann sie aber auch bearbeiten: Zeigt das 3D-Bild beispielsweise eine Landschaft, kann der Nutzer ein Video mit einem virtuellen Flug durch diese produzieren. Auch die Ausgabe auf ein iPhone ist möglich, wenn darauf der Inventor Publisher Mobile Viewer installiert ist. Schließlich kann er das 3D-Modell an einen 3D-Drucker exportieren, der das fotografierte Objekte dann nachbaut.

Photosynth und Photofly

Das Autodesk-System ist nicht die erste Software, die 3D-Modelle aus 2D-Bildern erzeugt. Microsoft bietet seit einigen Jahren das Programm Photosynth an. Der Unterschied sei allerdings die Genauigkeit, sagte Brian Mathews, Leiter der Autodesk Labs, dem US-Wissenschaftsmagazin Technology Review. Photofly sei die erste Software für Endkunden, die 3D-Modelle erzeugen kann, die präzise genug sind für einen 3D-Druck.

Autodesk will Project Photofly 2.0 in Kürze kostenlos zur Verfügung stellen. Einen genauen Termin nennt das Unternehmen nicht. Laut Technology Review soll die Software im Laufe der kommenden Woche erhältlich sein. Die Software läuft nur unter Windows (XP mit Service-Pack 3 und 7, Vista wird in den Systemvoraussetzungen nicht genannt). Der Computer sollte mindestens über einen Core2Duo-Prozessor von Intel und 1 GByte Arbeitsspeicher verfügen. Auf der Festplatte sollte 1 GByte Speicherplatz frei sein. Die Grafikkarte muss OpenGL-kompatibel (empfohlen ist Version 1.3) sein und braucht mindestens 256 MByte Speicher.

ExifTool kann mehr als nur Meta-Daten lesen und schreiben: Die von der Kamera gelieferten EXIF-Daten sind nicht immer korrekt, beispielsweise wenn das Kameradatum nicht stimmt oder der Kommentar noch auf den Vorbesitzer der Kamera hinweist. Solche Fehler korrigiert das Exif-Tool.

Die Sammlung von Perl-Skripten liest EXIF-, IPTC- und XMP-Daten und ändert diese auf Wunsch. Einen separaten Perl-Interpreter braucht man nicht. Für den vollen Funktionsumfang muss man sich mit der Kommandozeile vertraut machen, zum Korrigieren der Metadaten einzelner Bilder genügt das auf ExifTool aufsetzende ExifTool GUI.

Fotokorrektur läuft immer wieder auf die gleichen Arbeitsschritte hinaus. Einen pickt sich der JPG-Illuminator heraus, der sich auf das Aufhellen von Schatten und Abdunkeln der Lichter spezialisiert. Er bearbeitet zusätzlich den Kontrast und setzt Bilder in Schwarzweiß um. Wie der Name JPG-Illuminator schon sagt, richtet sich das Programm an Nutzer, die im JPG-Format fotografieren. Da es ohne Installation auskommt, startet es beispielsweise auch vom USB-Stick.
