Der freie Mediaplayer Banshee ist in der Version 2.2 freigegeben worden. Banshee kann sowohl Video- als auch Audiodateien und Podcasts abspielen, die Medienbestände auf verschiedenen Endgeräten synchronisieren und für digitale Einkaufstouren genutzt werden.

Das vor über sechs Jahren initiierte Projekt Banshee vermag nicht nur die gängigsten Musik- und Videoformate wiederzugeben, sondern bietet auch die Möglichkeit, eine CD-Sammlung abzuspielen oder zu importieren. Ferner unterstützt es Endgeräte wie MTP oder iPod und kann seine Daten synchronisieren. Banshee unterstützt verschiedene Abspielmodi, darunter auch Playlisten, Queues und einen Shuffle-Modus. Zudem bietet die Anwendung einen Bookmark-Manager, eine Metadaten-Korrektur und einen minimalistischen Modus an. Durch eine Plugin-Architektur kann die Anwendung um zusätzliche Funktionen erweitert werden.

Ein halbes Jahr nach der letzten Version 2.0 steht nun Banshee 2.2 zum Download bereit. Banshee Version 2.2 bietet eine Anbindung an den eMusic Store. Anwender können fortan in dem Shop direkt von Banshee aus nach Musikstücken suchen, durch den Shop navigieren und Stücke anhören und kaufen. Zudem wurde die Unterstützung von Barnes & Noble Nook, Motorola Atrix, Notion Ink Adam, Samsung Galaxy Ace, Samsung Galaxy S2 und Xperia X12 implementiert. Ferner unterstützt die Anwendung Standard-Radiosender, die automatisch beim ersten Start importiert werden.

Zu den weiteren Neuerungen von Banshee 2.2 gehört ein neuer Equalizer. Die Größe des Mini-Modus wurde weiter reduziert und bei den Abfragen von MusicBrainz wird nun UserAgent gesetzt. Zudem wird die ArtworkID in der Datenbank zwischengespeichert, um schnellere Starts der Anwendung zu erreichen. Ferner wurden seit Version 2.0 über 100 Fehler korrigiert.
