Die Tomahawk-Entwickler haben ihren »sozialen« Audioplayer in der Version 0.5 fertig gestellt. Neben der Desktopanwendung haben sie auch die Webapplikation toma.hk erweitert.

Die Entwickler bezeichnen Tomahawk als sozialen Audioplayer, weil er den Titel einer Audiodatei von ihrem Standort entkoppelt. Die Datei kann auf dem eigenen Rechner, im eigenen Netz, bei Freunden oder kommerziellen Dienstleistern liegen. Tomahawk ermöglicht es, mittels XMPP und Twitter auf die Musiksammlungen und Wiedergabelisten von Freunden zuzugreifen und so Musik über große Entfernungen hinweg gemeinsam zu hören. Der Audioplayer ist in der Lage, viele Quellen nach einem gesuchten Lied zu durchforsten.

Sowohl äußerlich als auch bei den inneren Werten hat sich bei Tomahawk viel getan. Die Version 0.5 des freien Audioplayers kommt mit einem neuen Logo, neuen Bedienelementen und einer überarbeiteten Interpreten-Seite. Anwender können Tomahawk nun nutzen, um ihre Spotify-Wiedergabelisten und Last.fm-Daten zu synchronisieren. Linux- und Windows-Nutzer dürfen den Audioplayer nun auch via Tastatur steuern. Dank verbesserter Schnittstellen müssen Anwender jetzt nicht mehr warten, bis alle Songs einer Playlist eingelesen wurden, sondern können ihre favorisierte Datei sofort abspielen.

Eine Funktionalität für »Neuveröffentlichungen« lässt Nutzer nach neuen Audiodateien eines Genres suchen. Laut den Entwicklern ermöglicht es diese Funktion, auch Stücke von bisher unbekannten Interpreten zu entdecken. Aus der Wiedergabeliste heraus kann zu ausgewählten Liedern eine Info-Seite (Track Info Page) aufgerufen werden, die ähnliche Lieder aufzeigt.

Über ein neues Widget können Anwender Freunde in sozialen Netzwerken mit der spannenden Information versorgen, welches Lied sie gerade hören. Tomahawk 0.5 unterstützt Zugriffskontrollen, mit denen Nutzer festlegen dürfen, wer auf ihre Musiksammlungen zugreifen darf.

Mit Toma.hk stellen die Entwickler ihrer Desktop-Anwendung eine Online-Applikation zur Seite, mit der Anwender Musik direkt im Browser abspielen können. Toma.hk wurde in dem letzten Wochen ausgebaut und spielt nun mit Online-Angeboten wie SoundCloud, YouTube, Official.fm, Deezer, Rdio, Last.fm, Ex.fm, Spotify und Jamendo zusammen. Anwender geben in einem zentralen Suchfeld den Interpretennamen an, um dann aus den gefundenen Songs einen auszuwählen, abzuspielen und mit anderen über Anbietergrenzen hinweg zu teilen.

Mit Toma.hk lassen sich Lieder zu Wiedergabelisten hinzufügen und ähnliche Lieder finden. Anwender können Links zu Liedern auf Webseiten einbetten, ohne sich darum scheren zu müssen, von welchem Anbieter ihre Besucher ihre Musik beziehen. Toma.hk bietet neben den Liedern auch Informationen über Künstler, Alben sowie Diskografien und zeigt auf Wunsch Hitlisten und Neuveröffentlichungen an.

Tomahawk wurde in C++ und Qt implementiert, läuft unter Linux, Mac OS X bzw. Windows und wurde unter der GPLv3 veröffentlicht. Die aktuelle Version kann von der Projektseite heruntergeladen werden. Tomahawk ist als Binärpaket für viele Distributionen verfügbar.

MP3packer sieht MP3s noch wesentlich genauer auf die Finger. Das Kommandozeilenwerkzeug schrumpft und optimiert die Dateien, indem es Sync-Fehler ausmerzt und unvollständige Frames herausfiltert. Dabei kann das Tool auch alle Metadaten wegfiltern – nützlich etwa, wenn ein ID3-Editor während der Datenverarbeitung abgestürzt ist. Am nützlichsten ist aber die Option, MP3-Dateien mit variabler Bitrate ohne Recoding ins CBR-Format (Constant Bit Rate) zu wandeln – zahlreiche Anwendungen vermögen VBR-MP3s immer noch nicht fehlerfrei zu handhaben.
