Auf Wunsch lassen sich die Songs in niedrigere Bitraten überführen, um Bandbreite zu sparen. Diverse Optimierungen für schwache Verbindungen stehen zur Verfügung. Playlisten speichert und lädt die Freeware in den gängigen Formaten M3U, PLS und XSPF.

Die Bedienung und Einrichtung des Musikservers ist nicht allzu kompliziert. Nach der Installation von Subsonic wird über http://localhost/ die Oberfläche von Subsonic aufgerufen. Im Einstellungen-Menü sucht man die gewünschten Musikordner aus.

Subsonic ermöglicht es, die eigene Lieblings-Musik überall hin mit zu nehmen. Wer ein Java-fähiges Mobiltelefon besitzt, kann seine Musikbibliothek an beliebige Stationen mit Internet-Anschluss streamen und auch unterwegs der Musik lauschen. Außerdem kann der Musikfreund die zugehörigen CD-Cover betrachten, Songtexte lesen und auch Webradios einbinden.
