In der auf nächste Woche verschobenen Version 34 wird Firefox eine geänderte Suchfunktion bringen, die einige Inkompatibilitäten heraufbeschwört.

Firefox 34 wäre eigentlich diese Woche fällig gewesen, wurde aber durch die eingeschobene Freigabe von Firefox 33.1 verzögert und soll nun nächste Woche erscheinen. Vorab warnt Firefox-Entwickler Jorge Villalobos in seinem Blog, dass eine Änderung in der Suchfunktion bevorsteht, die anfänglich zu einigen Inkompatibilitäten mit Erweiterungen führen kann. Die Änderung wurde erst in einer der letzten Betaversionen vorgenommen und steht im Zusammenhang mit der Ankündigung, in einigen Regionen eine andere Suchmaschine als Standard vorzugeben.

Die vorgenommenen Änderungen haben laut Firefox-Entwickler Philipp Sackl das Ziel, die Suche effizienter zu machen. Die Vorschläge, die angezeigt werden, Während man den Suchbegriff eingibt, sollen nun »besser organisiert« erscheinen, und unterhalb der Begriffsvorschläge wird eine Reihe von Buttons eingeblendet. Mit diesen Buttons wird es möglich, den Begriff auf einer spezifischen Webseite zu finden und direkt anzuzeigen. Effektiv ist laut Sackl nur noch ein Klick nötig, um die gesuchte Seite zu öffnen.

Firefox bringt eine Auswahl von vorinstallierten Suchmaschinen mit, die je nach Region allerdings unterschiedlich sind. Zudem ist diese Auswahl wie schon früher einfach änderbar. Man kann neue Suchmaschinen hinzufügen und vorhandene deaktivieren oder entfernen.

Die Änderung blieb nicht ohne Kritik aus den Reihen der Betatester. Neben der Tatsache, dass die Änderung ohne größere Tests in eine der letzten Betaversionen eingefügt wurde, anstatt sie in die Entwicklerversion einzubringen und mindestens drei Monate bis zur Freigabe zu testen, werden auch die Änderungen an der Oberfläche kritisiert. So gibt es zumindest anfänglich keine Schlüsselwortsuche mehr. Die ganze Funktionalität wurde mal eben schnell zusammengeschustert, dabei mussten Tastenkürzel und eine effektive Bedienung mit der Tastatur auf der Strecke bleiben. Laut Sackl ist geplant, diese Punkte zu verbessern. Für manche Kommentatoren riecht die Änderung stark danach, dass die Benutzer es möglichst schwer haben sollen, von Yahoo zu einer anderen Standard-Suchmaschine zu wechseln. So werde der Name der Standard-Suchmaschine nicht mehr angezeigt, bis man tatsächlich etwas suche. Der Wechsel der Standard-Suchmaschine erfordere nun vier Klicks statt zwei. Für Poweruser sei OpenSearch damit nutzlos. Dem schließt sich ein anderer Kommentator an, der die neue Suche als ineffizient für seine Arbeitsweise bezeichnet und sich die alte zurückwünscht.

Da die neue Suche zuerst nur in bestimmten Regionen erscheinen wird, sind Anwender der deutschen Firefox-Version vermutlich noch nicht betroffen. Alle anderen müssen jedoch damit rechnen, dass diverse Erweiterungen, die die Oberfläche oder das Verhalten der Suche ändern, in Firefox 34 nicht mehr funktionieren, da die Entwickler kaum Zeit hatten, eine Anpassung vorzunehmen.
