MZCacheView is a small utility that reads the cache folder of Firefox/Mozilla/Netscape Web browsers, and displays the list of all files currently stored in the cache. For each cache file, the following information is displayed: URL, Content type, File size, Last modified time, Last fetched time, Expiration time, Fetch count, Server name, and more.
You can easily select one or more items from the cache list, and then extract the files to another folder, or copy the URLs list to the clipboard.

Dank einer neuen Policy-Engine lässt sich Firefox 60 einfacher für den Einsatz in Firmen konfigurieren. Version 60 erscheint im Mai 2018 mit verlängertem Support (ESR) und wird keine Legacy-Add-ons mehr unterstützen.

Mit dem nächsten Extended-Support-Release (ESR) von Firefox erhält der Browser eine Policy-Engine. Diese Komponente liest während des Starts von Firefox die vom Administrator spezifizierten Konfigurationen aus, um Funktionen wie gewünscht einzustellen. Dadurch können Firmen ihre Unternehmensrichtlinien besser umsetzen und den Browser für ihre Mitarbeiter vorkonfigurieren.

Firefox will anfangs eine Plattform-agnostische Philosophie verfolgen. Die Richtlinien-Engine liest eine JSON-Datei im Installations-Verzeichnis von Firefox aus, darin konfigurieren Admins den Browser nach ihren Regeln. In einem Wiki zeigt Mozilla, wie eine solche JSON-Datei aussehen kann. Mit wenigen Zeilen lässt sich beispielsweise der Zugriff auf die Konfigurationsseiten about:config und about:addons für Nutzer sperren. Systemadministratoren können außerdem die in Firefox integrierten Dienste Pocket und Screenshots deaktivieren. Später soll die Policy-Engine auch Funktionen der Betriebssysteme als zusätzliche Eingabemöglichkeiten unterstützen. So soll es einen Support etwa für Windows Group Policy geben. Die Firefox-Entwickler wollen beim Ausbau der Policy-Engine auch das Feedback der Nutzer mit einfließen lassen.

Firefox 60 als ESR

Die Policy-Engine wird mit Version 60 des Browsers ausgeliefert, die im Mai 2018 erscheinen soll. Firefox 60 erhält zudem eine Langzeitunterstützung (ESR) – ursprünglich sollte Version 59 ein ESR werden. "Das gibt uns mehr Zeit, um an den Enterprise-Policies zu arbeiten", schreibt Firefox Release Manager Sylvestre Ledru.

Am 28. August 2018 erreicht Firefox 52 ESR sein End-of-Life und erhält keine Updates mehr. Es ist die letzte ESR-Version, die noch Legacy-Add-ons unterstützt. Mit dem Release von Version 57 (Quantum) war Firefox auf das WebExtensions-API umgestiegen und hatte alte Schnittstellen stillgelegt. Bis August müssen sich Nutzer von Windows XP um ein überfälliges Upgrade kümmern: Es endet dann auch der Support für das betagte Betriebssystem.

Die normale Firefox-Variante erhält alle sechs bis acht Wochen neue Features, was für Unternehmen problematisch sein kann. Deshalb bekommt der Extended-Support-Release nur gut jedes Jahr neue Funktionen. Firefox ESR ist gedacht für Firmen, Schulen, Universitäten und andere Organisationen. Seit Firefox 10 erfreute sich die ESR-Fassung laut Mozilla steigender Beliebtheit.

Firefox still uses more memory than most other web browsers. Truthfully, the amount it uses is ridiculous. Firefox can use up to 500MBs of memory if you keep it running. In addition, you will see that the memory usage keeps rising because of, you guessed it, memory leaks. Some Firefox users even reported memory usage over 1000MBs. That is half of the memory gone on most computers.

A solution to this issue is Firemin, a simple application that can help you eliminate all the memory leaks of Firefox. Firemin uses a safe API function called EmptyWorkingSet that basically forces the process (in this case Firemin) to use less memory. Other words, tells Firefox to give back some of the system memory it's hanging on to. Using this function will sometimes result in a slight performance decrease measured in milliseconds , but I do mean slight, the chance of you noticing the performance decrease is almost zero.
