Wer sich einen Überblick über aktive Prozesse des Rechners und Servers verschaffen will, dem steht mit dem Process Explorer der Sysinternals Suite ein hilfreiches Tool zur Seite. Der Process Explorer liefert in zwei Fenstern die gewünschten Informationen. Dabei zeigt das obere immer die aktiven Prozesse mit zugehörigen Konten an, während in dem unteren abhängig vom gewählten Modus entweder die geöffneten Handles des ausgewählten Prozesses erscheinen oder die geladenen DLLs und Dateien mit zugewiesenem Speicher. Mit Hilfe der Suchfunktion lassen sich zudem Prozesse finden, die bestimmte DLLs und Dateien geladen haben.

Ab der Version 12.0 zeigt der direkt aus der Prozessliste heraus aufrufbare Informationsdialog zu einem einzelnen Vorgang auch Daten zu dessen TCP/IP-Verbindungen an, ähnlich wie dies ab Windows Vista auch mit dem Ressourcenmonitor zu bewerkstelligen ist. Außerdem gibt der Process Explorer in den Erläuterungen zu laufenden Windows-Services an, welchem Prozess beziehungsweise Thread der Dienst zuarbeitet. Der Name svchost.exe, unter dem diese Dienste typischerweise in der Prozessliste auftauchen, gibt von sich aus kaum Auskunft darüber, welcher Dienst konkret gemeint ist und durch welchen Thread oder Prozess er gestartet wurde; der neue Process Explorer räumt dagegen mit dieser Tarnmöglichkeit für unliebsame Prozesse auf.
