This update provides enhancements and fixes to version 28. The number of changes have been done to support machines that have 64 bit processors. The other major enhancement is in the removable of unwanted toolbars that won't uninstall correctly. This type of enhancement will continue in future updates.

Update Notification:
· Ironically one of our new fixes relates to text on our PLUS screen that lets you know when a new version is available.
By popular demand WinPatrol will now send a message letting you know when a new build is available.
When this notification is displayed we also change the text on the PLUS screen to remind you.
Unfortunately, the text didn't always reset after you upgraded to the new version. This version will resolve that issue.

Windows 8 Task Manager:
· Instead of using MSConfig, Windows 8 includes a list of Startup programs as a tab in the new Task Manager.
Users can disable startup programs using the Windows Task Manager.
While WinPatrol's "Disable" feature includes additional features it
now recognizes choices made by the Task Manager and will alert Task Manager when files are disabled by WinPatrol.
As in the past WinPatrol will monitor programs which are disabled
so if they are forced back to normal by a partner program, WinPatrol will automatically reset them to disabled unless you click to Enable the program. (Windows 8 Only)

Installation Program Update:
· The WinPatrol setup program will no longer launch regedit as part of the install process.
In the past, regedit was used to set some useful examples on how to use the feature that allows
WinPatrol to monitor any registry location. Launching regedit was not acceptable
to some secure systems and with so many different versions of Windows not all of our examples
were useful on all platforms. A help file is still easily accessible on the Registry Monitoring tab.
(All Users during setup. PLUS required for custom registry monitoring.)

Windows XP Enhancement:
· As part of our dedication to XP users we've improved performance that can sometimes be affected by large Temp
Internet Folders or hard drives with little space.
Even if you don't use Internet Explorer unrelated quirks can sometimes occur when the temp file grows too large.

While for safety we recommend XP users upgrade to Windows 8 before
 the end of support from Microsoft next April, WinPatrol will continue to
detect changes including zero-day infiltrations on Windows XP systems.

As sometimes happens when you add one feature you break another.
For anyone who installed WinPatrol 28.8 on a non Windows 8 system the "Disabled" status of startup programs is now being displayed propertly.
This version 28.9 will fix that problem.

    Artificial Intelligence Security

    This new feature will increase WinPatrol's value exponentially over time. It will also be accessible for our future apps like Task Catcher "Extreme" and other partners interested in licensing the technology. Unlike the Optional sharing of choices used on our Community Info pages, all A.I. Security data is kept private on your machine.
    Testing of Task Catcher Extreme is restricted to current Task Catcher customers and/or BillP Studio Associates who agree to a strict NDA. Still in development our WinPatrol-Powered A.I.S.provides the 3rd generation of unique ideas created by BillP Studios to detect and stop dangerous new threats without crippling your computer.
    We believe a passive approach can still be used to detect and shut down instant attacks like Cryptolocker. We're seeing a trend in threats that remain in memory instead of becoming resident in the Windows registry or hard drive. These attacks will not be detected by most traditional Anti-Virus programs.

    Improvements and Bug Reports

    Semi-Transparent Alert messages on Windows 8 make Scotty less intrusive.
    Manifest file updated to support presistant WinPatrol window size and positions when using alternate DPI settings.
    Improvements to our Active Task List and more success Killing of active tasks using multi-selection standards.
    Introduction of new triggers to increase performance by reducing redundant monitoring(PLUS Only)

Best Performance Yet:

While the time has come to improve the look of WinPatrol it was still more important to optimize portions of the WinPatrol real-time monitor.
It's clear that many older machines are still providing a service even if they have a single core CPU and minimal memory.

Many common system checks that we previously read from the Windows registry are now stored in WinPatrol's local memory and updated only if needed.
This not only saves CPU cycles but it also saves our disc access. Other programs may rely on third-party software libraries but we still maintain complete control over every instruction executed by WinPatrol to detect changes.
Users with programs like Process Explorer will see the improvement immediately.

Reports:

The WinPatrol report and Hijack report have also been updated to be more useful.
Since internally Windows 7 and Windows 8 are still considered Windows version 6 we've made sure to do the proper conversion letting reports accurately provide version numbers for both Windows and Internet explorer.

New Cookie Support:

Unlike many programs WinPatrol has never relied on 3rd party program libraries for popular features.
The code in the two main WinPatrol components uses the "C" programming language and has been written at a Windows API level by WinPatrol's developer, Bill Pytlovany.
One exception is a DLL called SQLite3.dll which is used to access files which are part of the SQLite database.
Both Firefox and Chrome use the open source, public domain SQLite database to store their cookies.
The only way for WinPatrol to access these cookies is to use the SQLite code. In December a new version of SQLite3.dll was released and has been included with WinPatrol 2014.

The new version of SQLite should fix some cookie bugs which have been reported. We also plan on adding support for Chrome and Firefox plug-in's so having the new verion is also great incentive.
If you look at the files we list under the Hidden tab you'll notice files starting with etilqs_.
These are typically temporary files that are used by a program which uses the SQLite database.

Windows Update Handling:

WinPatrol notifications include information on the removal of any programs which are currently on the list of auto running files and control panel entries for installed programs.
We've found that during normal Microsoft Windows updates these entries are replaced and are expected changes that won't need notifications.
As with previous notifications WinPatrol wants you to know when a change occurs but not overwhelm you with messages.

Restore Position and Size:

WinPatrol is one of the few programs that use a tabbed interface but allow you to resize your window.
Over the years based on user feedback we do provide a maximum and minimize button.
In the past our maximize setting was not always saved from one session to another.
This new version fixes that problem and other issues related to changes in multi-monitor configurations.

Typo:

Other changes to WinPatrol 2014 are minor but very important.
In our last version a typo was introduced in the text displayed by the Scotty system tray icon.
Instead of letting you know Scotty was ready to pounce our typo said he was ready to bounce.
While Scottie's can certainly bounce I was pleased that so many of you reported this error.
It's a very embarrassing but I'm glad to know that folks are reading our messages.
It helped us review many of our text messages to make sure they would be useful.

Delayed Start:

One of the new favorite features, Delayed Start has been updated to handle some unique filename and parameter combinations which did not work as we expected.
We've also optimized our background monitor while waiting for programs yet to be launched.
The ""-express"" parameter is used when WinPatrol first launches so we can provide the quickest start time possible.
We still believe computers should turn on as quickly as TV's. While computer are starting quicker it's sad to see our new TV's seem to be taking longer.

Tooltips:

As promised I've focused on making WinPatrol easier and more powerful in 2014 with monthly updates. This version now includes Windows tooltips to provide a consistent, helpful interface.

Cookie Update for Chrome and Firefox:

WinPatrol uses the same public domain code that is used by Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and other new browsers. This version includes a copy of the newest library which appears in the WinPatrol folder as sqlite3.dll. You may notice in the WinPatrol list of hidden files many files that begin with "elitls" followed by random characters. These are SQLite files as you may notice elitls is SQLite backwards.

Window Positioning:

We've updated some Window components that weren't completely visible on some machines with custom DPI.
