Die automatische Update-Benachrichtigung des beliebten Open-Source-Passwortmanagers KeePass 2 nutzt eine ungesicherte Verbindung und lässt sich durch Dritte manipulieren. Eine Umstellung auf HTTPS lehnt der Entwickler derzeit ab.

Die Update-Funktion der bei Windows-Anwendern beliebten Passwortverwaltung KeePass 2 ist auch in der derzeit aktuellen Version 2.33 kompromittierbar. Darauf wies der Sicherheitsexperte Florian Bogner in einem Update seines bereits im März veröffentlichten Blog-Beitrags hin. Betroffen ist die offizielle Windows-Variante, nicht aber die inoffiziellen Portierungen wie die Mac-OS/Linux-Variante KeePassX oder die Android-App KeePassDroid.

KeePass prüft auf Wunsch regelmäßig, ob eine neue Version verfügbar ist. Dazu lädt die Anwendung Versionsinformationen mit einer unverschlüsselten Verbindung per HTTP von der Entwickler-Website herunter. Bogner demonstriert anschaulich, wie sich die Anwendung mittels eines Man-in-the-Middle-Angriffs täuschen lässt, sodass sie auf eine Version hinweist, die nicht existiert. KeePass lädt zwar nicht automatisch Updates herunter und öffnet lediglich die ebenso nicht per HTTPS abgesicherte Website. Diese lässt sich somit ebenfalls per MitM verändern, um Anwendern etwa eine manipulierte Version von KeePass unterzuschieben.

Alternate Password DB is a small and easy to use utility that can safely store all your passwords. With only one password you get access to the crypted data (BLOWFISH 256 bit).

The following entry types are available :
· Simple text
· Username/Password with comment
· Files (for example pictures)
· Tables

This entries can be stored in folders and subfolders. Cut/Copy/Paste of these entries are possible. Password files can be converted to an executable file, which can be ported on USB-stick or other moveable drives without the need to install this program.

You may also configure the program to lock itselft after period of time (main password will be required again). So your data will still be safe while the program is running and you have to leave your PC.

The entered data is crypted by saving and only accessable using a user defined password.

At the left there is a treeview, where elements (folders, subfolders, text-entries, keys, tables, files) can be added, modified or removed. At the right you find the content of the currently selected element.
