Die unter anderem für das Cracken von Hashes per Grafikchip (GPU) optimierte Software hashcat steht ab sofort im Quelltext als Open Source zum Download. Zudem soll hashcat jetzt noch flexibler und effizienter sein.

Der Entwickler von hashcat, Jens "atom" Steube, ist nach eigener Aussage ein Fan von Open-Source-Software. Daher veröffentlicht er seinen Passwort-Knacker hashcat/oclHashcat jetzt unter den Bedingungen der MIT-Lizenz als Open Source.

Durch die MIT-Lizenz soll sich die Software leicht in gängige Linux-Distributionen wie Ubuntu integrieren lassen. Steube, der Hauptautor bleiben will, sich aber über jeden Beitrag aus der Community freut, plant auch ein Paket für das bei Penetrationstestern beliebte Kali Linux.

Eigene GPU-Kernel und Krypto-Biblitoheken

Wie der Entwickler gegenüber heise Security erklärte, sei ein Hauptvorteil des Open-Source-Modells, dass Anwender ihre eigenen GPU-Kernel implementieren können. IT-Forensiker oder Penetrationstester stünden oft unter Geheimhaltungsvereinbarungen, die eine Weitergabe ihrer Anforderungen an Steube verhinderten. Eine offene Schnittstelle schloss der Programmierer aus Performancegründen aus. Open-Source-Software sei daher der beste Weg, die Bedürfnisse der Nutzer zu erfüllen.

Alternate Password DB is a small and easy to use utility that can safely store all your passwords. With only one password you get access to the crypted data (BLOWFISH 256 bit).

The following entry types are available :
· Simple text
· Username/Password with comment
· Files (for example pictures)
· Tables

This entries can be stored in folders and subfolders. Cut/Copy/Paste of these entries are possible. Password files can be converted to an executable file, which can be ported on USB-stick or other moveable drives without the need to install this program.

You may also configure the program to lock itselft after period of time (main password will be required again). So your data will still be safe while the program is running and you have to leave your PC.

The entered data is crypted by saving and only accessable using a user defined password.

At the left there is a treeview, where elements (folders, subfolders, text-entries, keys, tables, files) can be added, modified or removed. At the right you find the content of the currently selected element.

Da man jedoch nicht nur ein Passwort im Einsatz hat, hat man kaum die Möglichkeit, sich diese alle zu merken. Hier empfiehlt es sich, Programme wie z.B. KeePass oder Passwort Safe zu nutzen. Man muss sich nur noch ein Passwort merken.

Strong Passwords Need Entropy (S.P.N.E.) is a handy and lightweight application that you can use to determine the strength of your password. The program analyzes your password and displays its length, the character frequency and the number of symbols, lowercase and uppercase letters and digits.
Based on this information, it calculates the password entropy and the number of tries needed to find it.
