Ab 2017 wird es keine neuen Apps mehr für den Chrome-Browser geben. 2018 soll dann ganz Schluss sein, außer in Chrome OS.

Google verabschiedet sich nach drei Jahren etappenweise von den Chrome-Apps im Browser. In einem Blogbeitrag kündigte Produktmanager Rahul Roy-Chowdhury an, dass ab Ende 2016 keine neuen Apps mehr im Chrome-Browser installiert werden können. Bereits installierte Apps soll man bis Anfang 2018 weiter nutzen dürfen.

In der zweiten Jahreshälfte 2017 will Google den Chrome Web Store für Windows, Linux und Mac schließen. Eine Ausnahme bildet Googles eigenes Desktop-Betriebssystem Chrome OS: Hier bleibt alles wie gehabt, Chrome-Apps laufen zunächst unbefristet weiter.

Roy-Chowdhury begründete den Schritt damit, dass die Chrome Apps schlicht überflüssig geworden seien. Leidiglich ein Prozent der Chrome-Anwender nutzen ihm zufolge überhaupt noch aktiv die Apps – der Rest bevorzuge Web-Apps. App-Entwicklern empfiehlt er daher, aus ihren Chrome-Apps eben Web-Apps zu machen.

The Chrome team is delighted to announce the promotion of Chrome 53 to the stable channel for Windows, Mac and Linux. This will roll out over the coming days/weeks.

Chrome 53.0.2785.89 contains a number of fixes and improvements -- a list of changes is available in  the log.  Watch out for upcoming Chrome and Chromium blog posts about new features and big efforts delivered in 53.
