Am heutigen Donnerstag ist der auf Mozillas Firefox-Engine aufsetzende Media-Player Songbird in Version 0.1 für Windows aus dem Ei geschlüpft, die die Entwickler als "User Preview" bezeichnen. Der unter GNU General Public License veröffentlichte Player präsentiert sich als Hybrid aus Webbrowser und Media-Player im Look eines schwarzen iTunes. Zum Darstellen von Webseiten setzt Songbird auf Firefox' Rendering-Engine Gecko, auch die Skinning-Engine stammt von Firefox.

Zur Musikwiedergabe dient Songbird der Codec des VLC Media Player aus dem VideoLAN-Projekt. Unter anderem unterstützt Songbird MP3, AAC, Ogg Vorbis, FLAC und WMA und spielt damit die wichtigsten Audioformate ab, beherrscht jedoch kein DRM. Während grundlegende Funktionen zum Erstellen und Verwalten von Playlisten vorhanden sind, fehlen in Version 0.1 wichtige Funktionen, etwa zum Auslesen von CDs oder Proxy-Einstellungen für den Browser-Kern. Dafür erfasst Songbird große Musiksammlungen schon jetzt sehr fix und wertet ID3-Tags erst im Hintergrund aus. Zudem lassen sich über Mozilla XUL bereits Webshops in Songbird integrieren und über die JavaScript-API Playlisten von der eigenen Webpage aus befüllen.

Songbird lässt sich ebenso wie Firefox über Extensions um neue Funktionen erweitern. Versionen für Linux und Mac OS X sind geplant, momentan jedoch noch nicht verfügbar.

Man nehme eine Media-Player-Software a la Itunes, füge Firefox hinzu, dann schüttelt man das ganze kräftig durch und fertig ist das, was irgendwann kommendes Jahr als Songbird erscheinen soll. Wer nicht so lange warten möchte, der kann jetzt schon mal einen Blick auf die zweite Vorabversion von Songbird werfen.

Der unter der Open-Source-Flagge derzeit in der Entwicklung befindliche und auf Firefox basierende "Web Player" Songbird ist in der neuen Vorabversion 0.2 erschienen. Songbird soll Anwendern die Möglichkeit bietetn, Musikinhalte direkt im Browser abzuspielen, ohne die Seite verlassen zu müssen. Außerdem ist es mit Songbird möglich, die eigene Musiksammlung zu verwalten. Hierfür bietet die Anwendung alle notwendigen Werkzeuge.

Im Februar war die erste Vorabversion von Songbird erschienen . Seitdem war es etwas still geworden um das Projekt. Nun haben die Entwickler eine weitere Vorabversion zum Download bereitgestellt, mit der deutlich wird, welchen Fortschritt das Projekt bereits gemacht hat.

Die Release Notes für Songbird 0.2 listen unzählige Neuerungen auf. So unterstützt Songbird mittlerweile mehr als 30 Sprachen, hat einen neuen Miniplayer an Bord und kann sich künftig selbst über das Internet aktualisieren.

In diesem Google Video demonstriert einer der Entwickler, hörbar gut gelaunt, welche Funktionen Songbird zu bieten hat. So erkennt Songbird beispielsweise alle auf Websites eingebundenen MP3-Dateien und spielt diese ab, als seien sie lokal auf der Festplatte abgelegt. Über das von Firefox her gewohnte Sucheingabefeld neben der Adresszeile kann gezielt nach Musik im Web gesucht werden und diese Funde mit einem Mausklick in die lokale Musiksammlung abgelegt werden.

Songbird 0.2 ist trägt den Zusatz "Devolper Preview" und ist in deutscher Sprache für Windows XP/2000, Linux und MacOS X verfügbar. Die finale Version soll irgendwann im Jahr 2007 erscheinen.

Webseiten können Media-Player-Funktionen von Songbird verwenden

Mit der Veröffentlichung von Songbird 0.3 sowie einem dazu passenden Web-API wird der Einsatzzweck des Media-Player-Browsers umgedreht. Bisher war es ein Media-Player, der sich mit dem Internet verbinden konnte. Fortan soll es aber auch möglich sein, dass Webseiten die Möglichkeiten von Songbird nutzen und etwa den Media-Player verwenden.
Mit der Veröffentlichung des Webpage API erhalten Webseiten-Anbieter die Möglichkeit, auf die Media-Player-Fähigkeiten von Songbird zuzugreifen. So können etwa Anbieter von Musik den Media-Player-Browser verwenden, um ihre Produkte zu vermarkten. Damit wird Songbird eine Art Webversion von Apples Desktop-Software iTunes, was sich mit geringem Aufwand realisieren lassen soll. Das Musik-Label Insound.com bietet bereits eine Songbird-Anbindung.

Darüber hinaus steht eine Add-On-API für Songbird bereit, mit der Entwickler beliebige Erweiterungen erstellen können, die sich nahtlos in Songbird integrieren. Sie sind ein Pendant zu den Firefox-Erweiterungen und Songbird-Nutzer werden ebenfalls darüber informiert, wenn eine neue Version einer Erweiterung verfügbar ist. Als erste Erweiterungen stehen Greasemonkey und mashTape zur Verfügung.

Das Profil- und Bibliotheksformat von Songbird wurde mit der aktuellen Version geändert. Derzeit können diese Daten nicht in die aktuelle Songbird-Version importiert werden. Aber dafür kann Songbird 0.3 parallel zu einer Vorversion verwendet werden. Songbird verwendet den Mozilla-Code als Basis und befindet sich noch in einem frühen Entwicklungsstadium. Viele geplante Funktionen fehlen noch und sollen im Laufe der Zeit integriert werden.

Onlinemusikshop 7digital unterstützt Entwicklung des freien Mediaplayers

Die Entwickler "Pioneers of the Inevitable" haben die finale Version von Songbird 1.1 veröffentlicht. Gegenüber der kürzlich veröffentlichten Betaversion ist eine Funktion hinzugekommen. Wichtigste Neuerungen von Version 1.1 sind die Anzeige von Albumcovern und eine verbesserte MTP-Unterstützung.

Nachdem im Februar 2009 eine erste Betaversion von Songbird 1.1 zum Testen bereitgestellt wurde, hat die Entwicklergruppe "Pioneers of the Inevitable" nun die finale Version 1.1 des freien Mediaplayers veröffentlicht.

Neu ist eine Anbindung an den digitalen Musikladen 7digital. Nutzer können direkt aus dem Programm Songs aus dem Angebot von 7digital erwerben. Einen Teil der Erlöse spendet der Betreiber für die Weiterentwicklung des Programms.

Weitere Neuerungen gegenüber der im Dezember 2008 veröffentlichten Version 1.0 waren bereits in der im Februar 2009 veröffentlichten Betaversion implementiert. Zu den wichtigsten neuen Funktionen gehört die Anzeige von Albumcovern, die von Last.fm geladen werden, sowie eine verbesserte MTP-Unterstützung. Dazu kommt eine überarbeitete Sortierfunktion, die bestimmte und unbestimmte Artikel ignoriert. Die Band The Sisters Of Mercy findet der Nutzer also jetzt unter dem Buchstaben S und nicht mehr unter T.

Daneben haben Nutzer mit dieser Version die Möglichkeit, einzelne Ordner zu beobachten. Werden Songs aus dem Verzeichnis gelöscht oder hinzugefügt, wird auch die Bibliothek automatisch angepasst.

Schließlich verfügt Songbird ab sofort über eine Normalisierungsfunktion: Wenn Songs über entsprechende Metadaten ("Replay Gain") verfügen, spielt das Programm sie in gleicher Lautstärke ab. Das gilt auch für Stücke mit iTunes-spezifischen Daten.

Bisheriger Updateprozess konnte zu Datenverlust führen

Für den freien Mediaplayer Songbird 1.1 steht ab sofort ein Update bereit, das ein paar Programmfehler beseitigt. Unter anderem wird ein Fehler korrigiert, der auf einem iPod zu Datenverlust führen kann.
Während eines Updates von Songbird kann es zu einem Datenverlust auf einem angeschlossenen iPod kommen. Mit der neuen Version 1.1.2 soll dieser Fehler der Vergangenheit angehören. Außerdem kommt es mit dem Update nicht mehr bei der Wiedergabe von Titeln mit unterschiedlicher Sample-Rate zu einer Veränderung der Abspiellautstärke.

Songbird 1.1.2 behebt außerdem einen Fehler, der manche Windows-Anwender plagte: Beim Beenden der Software stürzte diese regelmäßig ab. Insgesamt soll die Software mit dem Update stabiler und zuverlässiger laufen.

Songbird 1.1.2 steht ab sofort für Windows, Linux und MacOS als Download zur Verfügung. Das Update wird auch über die Updatefunktion der Software verteilt.

Automatically Organize Library Files

Songbird can now automatically organize the files that are contained in your library. Once enabled, it will consolidate your media in one location. You can customize the structure of the folder and file names based on metadata contained in every track.
2-Way iTunes Import/Export

If you’re using iTunes Music Store to purchase content, you can now automatically expose iTunes library tracks and playlists into Songbird. You can also export tracks and playlists added to Songbird back into iTunes, so that they can easily be synced to your iPhone or iPod touch.
Last.fm Radio

Last.fm Radio supports artist, tag, and user stations, mapping station links on the Last.fm website to play internally in Songbird. It includes the Radio Directory allowing you to conveniently browse and explore the tag and artist relationships on Last.fm. Additionally, the Radio directory includes quick links for playing stations based on your Last.fm library, your Songbird library, and friends/neighbors’ libraries.
10-band Equalizer

Now you can tweak the frequency response of the audio playback to match your room’s acoustics or your personal preferences.

Songbird now includes basic support for managing music on MSC devices.  This functionality is currently only available on Windows.
XULRunner Localization

All of the UI elements that Songbird inherits directly from XULRunner will display in the correct localized translation when a translation is available.
Metadata Editing for WMA and AAC

Songbird now supports metadata editing for WMA and AAC files.

We’ve fixed the snag mentioned in our previous post. It wasn’t anything serious — just a UI glitch exposed during updates in which some remnants of the old Gonzo feather were showing up in the new Purple Rain feather, which made mashTape and LyricMaster hard to use.  If you’re interested in the full details, head on over to bugzilla.songbirdnest.com and read up on bug 19334.
