Am heutigen Dienstag nimmt der Online-Musikdienst Spotify seinen Betrieb in Österreich auf. Erst vergangene Woche hatten die Verwertungsagenturen AKM und austro mechana mitgeteilt, eine Einigung mit Spotify über die Rechte für den von ihnen betreuten Musikkatalog erzielt zu haben. Die Details dieser Übereinkunft sind geheim.

Das Geschäftsmodell von Spotify besteht einerseits aus kostenlosen Musikstreams, die mit Werbung unterstützt werden. Darüber hinaus bietet das Unternehmen kostenpflichtige Stream-Abonnements für PCs und Smartphones an, bei denen auf Werbung verzichtet wird und die den Nutzern neben höherer Qualität einen unbeschränkten Zugriff auf die Bibliothek von derzeit über 15 Millionen Titeln erlauben. Wann Spotify in Deutschland verfügbar ist, steht noch in den Sternen; während die Labels mitspielen würden, muss sich Spotify erst noch mit der GEMA einigen. Die Verwertungsgesellschaft hat grundlegend andere Ansichten über das Vergütungsmodell: Während Spotify eine Pauschale pro Nutzer vorgeschlagen hatte, verlangt die GEMA eine Vergütung pro abgerufenem Song. Deutsche Konkurrenten von Spotify wie Simfy sind allerdings schon seit einiger Zeit verfügbar.

Voraussetzung für Neuanmeldungen bei Spotify ist ein Facebook-Konto. Spotify selbst gibt es in drei Preisklassen: werbefinanziert für maximal zehn Stunden pro Monat bei maximal fünf Abspielungen desselben Songs, "Unlimited" für 5 Euro monatlich sowie "Premium" für 10 Euro monatlich. Letzteres Paket bringt eine teilweise höhere Tonqualität, einen umfangreicheren Katalog sowie die Möglichkeit zur Offline-Nutzung und zur Inanspruchnahme mit Mobiltelefonen.

Die Nutzungsbedingungen dürften noch nicht vollständig für österreichische Nutzer angepasst worden sein. Während in den Nutzungsbedingungen einseitige Preisänderungen und eine automatische Abo-Verlängerung vorgesehen sind, heißt es auf anderen Teilen der Website, dass nach Ende des bezahlten Zeitraums der Zugang automatisch auf die werbefinanzierte Version umgestellt werde.

Der Musikstreamingdienst Spotify bring sein Gratis-Angebot wie erwartet auch auf Tablets und – mit Einschränkungen – Smartphones. Während der bisher vom PC bekannte Gratisdienst ab sofort auch für Tablets erhältlich ist, gibt es auf dem Smartphone noch Grenzen: Handy-Nutzer können Playlisten sowie Songs von bestimmten Künstlern im zufälligen "Shuffle"-Modus kostenfrei hören. Dabei lassen sich die Titel überspringen, aber nicht einzeln auswählen. Die gezielte Auswahl von Songs aus dem Spotify-Portfolio auf dem Smartphone, ein werbefreier Dienst und höchste Streaming-Qualität bleiben zahlenden Kunden vorbehalten, die knapp 10 Euro pro Monat für Spotify Premium hinblättern müssen.
