Der CD- und DVD-Emulator Virtual CD für die Windows-Plattform ist ab sofort in der Version 7 erhältlich und bietet nun die Möglichkeit, CD- oder DVD-Images auf entsprechende Medien zu brennen. Außerdem umfasst die Software eine Umwandlungsoption, um Virtual-CD-Images in das ISO-Format oder zurück zu konvertieren.
Virtual CD 7 brennt Image-Daten auf beliebige Datenträger, was von CD-RW über DVD-RW bis zu DVD+RW und DVD-RAM reicht, sofern dies von den entsprechenden Brennern unterstützt wird. Natürlich lassen sich darüber auch CD- und DVD-Rohlinge brennen. Damit soll die Datensicherung und der Datenaustausch erleichtert werden.
Neben den Virtual-CD-Images lassen sich darüber auch ISO-Images brennen, wobei die Software zwischen den beiden Formaten konvertieren kann. So lassen sich Virtual-CD-Images in ISO-Images konvertieren oder ISO-Images werden zu Virtual-CD-Laufwerken.
Außerdem wurde die Explorer-Integration verbessert, was eine leichtere Bedienung verspricht. Weitere Verbesserungen erhielt die Katalogfunktion, die nun nicht mehr auf den Einsatz mit Datenmedien beschränkt ist, sondern auch mit Musikdaten umgehen kann.
Virtual CD 7 für die Windows-Plattform soll ab sofort für 39,95 Euro erhältlich sein. Der Upgrade-Preis beträgt 19,95 Euro. Der Preis für eine Fünf-Benutzer-Lizenz liegt bei 84,95 Euro für die private Nutzung bzw. 139,50 Euro bei kommerziellem Einsatz. Parallel zur Vorstellung der neuen Virtual-CD-Version hat H+H Software auch den Network Management Server (NMS) in der neuen Version 7.0 vorgestellt, worüber sich die Neuerungen von Virtual CD direkt einsetzen lassen. Mit dem NMS werden Virtual CD-Netzwerkstrukturen verwaltet und gepflegt. Der NMS 7.0 soll ebenfalls ab sofort verfügbar sein und kostet 499,- Euro, während der Upgrade-Preis bei 99,- Euro liegt.

Die Version 4.0 des CD/DVD-Emulators Daemon Tools ist nun auch für 64-Bit-Windows-Versionen erschienen.
Vor knapp zwei Wochen war Daemon Tools in der Version 4.0 erschienen . Die Entwickler haben nun, wie vorab schon versprochen, am Wochenende die 64-Bit-Version nachgereicht. Bis auf kleinere Bugfixes entspricht die x64- der 32-Bit-Fassung.
Daemon Tools v4 x64 ist etwa für den Einsatz in Verbindung mit einer 64-Bit-Version von Windows XP gedacht. Auch diese Variante kommt mit Adware, die den Namen "Daemon Tools Searchbar" trägt. Die Adware soll dafür sorgen, dass sich das Projekt weiterhin finanzieren kann. Die Anwender haben aber während der Installation die Möglichkeit zu unterbinden, dass sich die Adware auf dem Rechner installiert. Im Nachhinein kann die Adware per "Systemsteuerung, Software" entfernt werden.

Der CD/DVD-Emulator Daemon Tools steht ab sofort in der neuen Version 4.03 zum Download bereit. Mit der neuen Version korrigieren die Entwickler diverse Bugs der Mitte November erschienenen Version 4.0.
Die Entwickler des praktischen CD/DVD-Emulators Daemon Tools haben die Version 4.03 zum Download bereitgestellt. Die neue Version ist sowohl in einer 32-Bit- als auch in einer 64-Bit-Fassung erschienen.
Laut Angaben der Entwickler werden mit der Version 4.03 eine Reihe von Bugs behoben, die sich in der Version 4.0 (x86) beziehungsweise 4.0.1 (x64) eingeschlichen hatten. Teilweise führten diese Bugs zu Abstürzen. Darüber hinaus wurden auch ein Bug in Verbindung mit Raid und ein weiterer im Zusammenspiel mit Nero korrigiert.
Daemon Tools war nach langer Entwicklungszeit Mitte November in der Version 4 erschienen ( wir berichteten ). Kurze Zeit nach der 32-Bit-Version folgte die 64-Bit-Fassung. Für die Version 4 wurde das Tool komplett von neu auf entwickelt. Eine ISO-Datei braucht beim Einsatz von Daemon Tools nicht auf eine CD/DVD gebrannt werden, sondern kann in ein mittels Daemon Tools erstelltem virtuellen Laufwerk eingelegt werden.
Daemon Tools 4.03 ist gratis und kommt inklusive einer Adware, durch die sich das Projekt finanziert. Während der Installation haben Sie die Möglichkeit zu verhindern, dass sich die Adware installiert. Alternativ kann die Adware auch später nachträglich deinstalliert werden.

Denoiser soll Geräuschentwicklung von CD- und DVD-Laufwerken verringern
Mit Virtual CD 8 kommt eine neue Version des CD- und DVD-Emulators auf den Markt. Die Windows-Software simuliert einen CD- und DVD-Brenner, um selbst ohne passende Hardware virtuelle CDs und DVDs zu brennen. Ferner haben die Funktionen für virtuelle Laufwerke einige Verbesserungen erfahren und ein Denoiser soll der Geräuschkulisse von CD- und DVD-Laufwerken den Schrecken nehmen.
Der virtuelle Brenner in Virtual CD 8 verhält sich exakt so wie ein normaler CD- oder DVD-Brenner und kann von anderen Programmen entsprechend angesprochen werden. Der Brennvorgang beschreibt dann natürlich weder eine CD noch eine DVD. Stattdessen legt die Software ein CD- oder DVD-Image auf Festplatte an, das sich später auch auf CD- oder DVD-Medien brennen lässt. Durch Unterstützung von DVD-RAM beherrscht der virtuelle DVD-Brenner zudem eine Verschlüsselung nach AES 256 Bit, um unberechtigte Zugriffe zu erschweren.
Nach Herstellerangaben verträgt sich Virtual CD 8 nun besser mit Software, die zwingend beim Programmstart eine CD oder DVD im Laufwerksschacht erwartet. Dazu legt Virtual CD passende Images an, um solche Abfragen zu meistern. Die Entwickler verpassten Virtual CD außerdem einen Denoiser, der die Geräusche von CD- und DVD-Laufwerken verringern soll, indem Geschwindigkeit und Timeout-Zeit entsprechend angepasst werden.
Zudem wurde sowohl die CD-Toolbox als auch der Schnellzugriff über den Tray-Bereich überarbeitet, womit der Anbieter eine leichtere Bedienung verspricht. Die neue Version unterstützt Windows XP in der 64-Bit-Edition, versteht nun mehr Sonderformate und bringt erweiterte API- und Skriptingfunktionen.
Virtual CD 8 ist ab sofort für die Windows-Plattform zum Preis 39,95 Euro im Internet zu haben. Im Juni 2006 kommt die Box-Version in den Handel. Der Upgrade-Preis beträgt 19,95 Euro. Note that no quotes must be used in installation path even if name has spaces.
All critical errros will be still displayed no matter silent or not.
Case of parameters is important, eg. /s will not work.
Reboot prompt will not be shown.
If SPTD was not present then it will be silently installed but
PC will not be rebooted - it is assumed the administrator who
performs unattended install will take care of reboot and restarts DT setup after reboot in this case.
It is best first to use standalone SPTD installer and install it silently this way:
sptdinst-x86.exe add /q
Note: SPTD 1.37 will not display debugger warning dialog anymore. They left this info in EULA only as this message confuses many users and also not "silent setup friendly".

Neue Version kommt Anfang Mai 2007 in den Handel
Mit einer neuen Version von Virtual CD soll die Arbeit mit virtuellen CD-Laufwerken weiter vereinfacht werden. Virtual CD 9 bringt dafür eine inkrementelle Erweiterung von Image-Dateien, Unterstützung von USB-Sticks sowie unbegrenzt viele virtuelle Brenner.
Durch die inkrementelle Erweiterung können bestehende Image-Dateien um neue Informationen erweitert werden und Laufwerke können sich nun auch auf USB-Sticks befinden. Alle virtuellen Laufwerke können ab sofort auch als Brenner genutzt werden, um das Brennen einer CD oder DVD zu simulieren.
Virtual CD richtet virtuelle CD-Laufwerke ein, die sich wie normale Laufwerke verhalten. Mit einem Assistenten lässt sich der Inhalt zweier Datenträger vergleichen. Dies schließt auch den Vergleich zweier Image-Dateien ein. Virtual CD 9 wurde außerdem an Windows Vista angepasst und wird mit entsprechend zertifizierten Treibern ausgeliefert.

API changed so that CreateDevice/Ex and RemoveDevice now handle directory mount points directly. This makes it possible for applications to call just one function for most common mount or dismount tasks. This also indirectly means that DiscUtilsDevio.exe now handle directory mount points as well, which it did not do before.
Uninstall script. Idea via e-mail from "kbh". When ImDisk is uninstalled from Add/Remove programs in Control Panel, it now checks first to see if there are any existing ImDisk virtual disks that need to be dismounted first. Otherwise, it goes on with stopping services and unloading drivers so that uninstall could finish without any need for reboot.
All exe, sys, dll, cpl and similar files are now signed with trusted certificate. Previously, only kernel level modules have been signed.
Correction to shared memory proxy client in ImDisk driver. This component now correctly split I/O requests that are too large for the supplied shared memory buffer.
Decimal numbers are now allowed in disk size / extend size fields in Control Panel applet.

Command line tool could get stuck in endless loop when error occurred when attempting to load hung driver. There are now a few further protections to avoid this.
Temporary drive letter assignment during formatting from command line tool. This will hopefully fix the problem with formatting wrong drive when drive letter is already defined by an already existing other device. It also means that it will be possible to format new virtual disks with no assigned drive letters, as long as a temporary drive letter could be assigned during format operation.
A minor mistake in imdisk.h, about ImDiskOpenDeviceByNumber: the description speaks of a "FileName" argument instead of "DeviceNumber".
Byte-swap feature. A new command line option to instruct driver to byte-swap all I/O buffers. This is useful when recovering files from harddisks from some embedded devices or similar that store data in reverse byte order.
Setup helper applications without crtdll.dll dependencies. This makes it easier to install on Windows Server Core editions where 32 bit crtdll.dll is not included.

AWEAlloc driver: Protection against possible data corruption when multiple I/O requests are handled simultaneously. Not necessary when used with ImDisk, but could add some extra protection when awealloc is used from other applications or drivers.
ImageOffset REG_QWORD registry setting, to specify offset within image file. Implemented primarily to make it possible to save -b switch settings in registry.
Corrected some calls to IoCallDriver to make sure that not the wrong level driver is called in the device stack used for proxy communication. No problems have been reported because of this, though, but this correction makes sure that proxy communication works correctly even if filter drivers are loaded for the communication device.
Cache latest I/O block in the same way as in Arsenal Image Mounter, to be returned directly in dispatch routine. This could improve performance in cases where applications or filesystem drivers frequently access the same areas on the virtual disk.
AWEAlloc driver: Support for automatically expanding the in-memory "file" when writing beyond EOF.
Support for passing through IOCTL/FSCTL requests through ImDisk driver down to the image file. Could be useful to send direct filesystem control commands directly to the driver that handles the underlying image file..

ImgDrive is a free tool which can mount multiple disc images as virtual CD, DVD, HD-DVD or BD drives.
The program supports from 1 to 7 drives. You're able to set the number of drives you need from ImgDrive's system tray icon, or disable the feature on demand.
ImgDrive's system tray menu lists each of these drive letters in turn, and you can select one, mount a new image (iso, ccd, cue, isz, mds and nrg formats are supported), or dismount the current image as required.
These images can be automatically mounted, if required, meaning each virtual drive is restored when Windows reboots.
There's also an "Integration" option, which in theory enables images to be mounted from their Explorer right-click menu. This didn't work for us, but we've no idea why: maybe you'll be luckier.

Release Notes
This version brings an option in MountImg to mount image files at Windows startup. Files that don't require DiscUtilsDevio are directly mounted by the driver, like with the -P switch of imdisk.exe. Otherwise, a new service is added (ImDiskImg).
As always, there are tooltips to give some details.
There is also a lot of bug fixes, the main ones are in the changelog. In particular:
- There was a bug that prevented notifications to be sent at system startup. I used this opportunity to change the method. Instead of using the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run registry key, I have found a method to create a process in the user's session directly from the service, in order to bypass the session 0 isolation.
This method has various advantages, such as to avoid to send notifications for nothing when the user logs on after being logged off.
- A bug of Windows prevents the drag and drop to work when the file comes from a 32-bit application and is dropped into a 64-bit one.
