Der VLC oder Videolan Client Media Player wurde ursprünglich dafür konzipiert, Videos übers Netzwerk zu streamen. Inzwischen hat er sich zu einem wahren Multitalent im Bereich der Medienplayer gemausert. Er ist als DVD-, VCD- und Audio-Player einsetzbar. In den meisten Fällen ist VLC nicht von vorinstallierten Codecs abhängig, da er selbst mit einer großen Codec-Menge bestückt ist. Als Player unterstützt er MPEG- und DivX-Streaming und kann damit auch Videos schon während des Downloads abspielen.

DV-Unterstützung unter Linux und nativer Intel-MacOSX-Support

Die Abspielsoftware VLC Media Player ist jetzt in Version 0.8.5 erschienen und bringt unter anderem in der entsprechenden Version eine native Unterstützung für Mac-Intel-Rechner mit. Außerdem unterstützt die neue Version DV von Digitalkameras per FireWire unter Linux.

Zudem ist für Audio-CDs die CDDB-Unterstützung verbessert worden und zahlreiche neue oder verbesserte Videofilter wie Teilvergrößerung, Comic-Stil und Bluescreen-Überblendung dazugekommen. Auch ein neues AJAX-basiertes Webinterface, die Unterstützung von Winamp 2 Skins sowie ein Mozilla Plugin für MacOS X (nur PowerPCs) ist nun dabei.

Eine vollständige Übersicht über die Änderungen haben die Entwickler auf einer eigenen Seite aufgelistet.

Die Binarys für die unterschiedlichsten Betriebssysteme und der Quellcode sind auf der VLC-Download-Seite zu finden. Für Windows ist das Paket beispielsweise 7,9 MByte groß. Für MacOS X muss man 11,7 MByte Daten herunterladen.

Videolan Client stabiler im Vollbildmodus unter Vista und MacOS X

Mit einem kleinen Versionssprung von 0.8.6a zu 0.8.6b haben sich die Videolan-Entwickler auf Fehlerbehebungen und kleinere Verbesserungen konzentriert. Insbesondere beim Abspielen von Videos unter MacOS X sowie unter Windows Vista soll der VLC Media Player nun stabiler arbeiten.

Das Hauptaugenmerk der Entwickler lag bei der neuen Version 0.8.6b des VLC Media Players auf dem Beheben von Fehlern, die zu Abstürzen der Software führten. Insbesondere unter MacOS X war die letzte Version von VLC nicht besonders stabil und neigte im Vollbildmodus zu Abstürzen. Das Videolan-Projekt hat sich dieser angenommen und will insbesondere das Verhalten im Vollbildmodus verbessert haben. Zudem soll das Dekodieren von VP31-Videos unter Windows stabiler sein.

Die Entwickler haben sich nicht nur auf reine Fehlerbehebungen konzentriert, sondern auch eine kleine Anzahl von Verbesserungen in die neue Version einfließen lassen. VLC unterstützt jetzt Teletext-Untertitel (telx) und das Abspielen von Flashvideos (inkl. VP61 und VP60) soll ebenfalls verbessert worden sein. Außerdem wurde an der besseren Bedienbarkeit des Browser-Plug-Ins und des Vollbildmodus unter MacOS X gearbeitet.

Der VLC Media Player 0.8.6b steht für verschiedene Plattformen sowohl im Quelltext als auch als vorbereitete Pakete zum Herunterladen bereit. Alle Änderungen im Überblick gibt es in einem Wiki-Eintrag des Projektes.

Zahlreiche kleine Korrekturen am freien Mediaplayer

Der freie Mediaplayer VLC steht in der Version 0.9.9 zum Download bereit. Mit dabei ist ein neuer Decoder für Real Video sowie kleine Verbesserungen, vor allem bei der Mac-Unterstützung.
Das Videolan-Projekt hat seinen Mediaplayer VLC in der Version 0.9.9 mit einem neuen, experimentellen Decoder für Real Video 3.0 und 4.0 versehen. Zudem gibt es einige Korrekturen am Real-Demuxer.

Verbessert wurde auch die Unterstützung von MacOS X, sowohl in Bezug auf das Interface als auch auf die Leistung bei Abspielen von Videos auf Intel-Macs. Unter Windows soll die Vollbildwiedergabe nun auch bei Nutzung mehrerer Displays korrekt arbeiten.

Darüber hinaus haben die Entwickler einige Fehler bereinigt und VLC beigebracht, RTP-Pakete auch auf abstrusen Ports zu empfangen.

Version 1.0.0, die sich derzeit noch in der Entwicklungsphase befindet, bietet eine verzögerungslose Pausierungsfunktion, eine Slow Motion (Frame by Frame), einige Verbesserungen für Untertitel, zahlreiche neue Decoder sowie viele Bugfixes. Das Entwickler-Team ist optimistisch, dass dieser vierte Release Candidate die letzte Vorabversion vor der finalen Ausgabe ist. Version 1.0.0 nach rund zehn Jahren Entwicklung

Der freie Mediaplayer VLC steht ab sofort in der Version 1.0.0 zum Download bereit. Die GPL-Software kann mit zahlreichen Video- und Audioformaten umgehen und wartet in der Version 1.0.0 unter anderem mit Live-Recording sowie Timeshifting auf.
Rund zehn Jahre arbeitete das Videolan-Projekt am VLC Media Player, bevor jetzt die Version 1.0.0 zum Download bereitgestellt wurde. Der Mediaplayer läuft unter verschiedenen Betriebssystemen, einschließlich Windows, Linux, MacOS X und diversen BSD-Varianten. Auch wenn erst jetzt die Version 1.0.0 erschien, wird die Software seit Jahren von vielen Nutzern eingesetzt.

VLC 1.0.0 bringt unter anderem Decoder für AES3 (SMPTE 302M), Dolby Digital Plus (E-AC-3), True HD/MLP, Blu-ray Linear PCM, QCELP (Qualcomm PureVoice) sowie Real Video 3.0 und 4.0 mit. Seit längerem integrierte Decoder wurden zuletzt nochmals verbessert und Fehler darin beseitigt. Seit dem Release Candidate der Version 1.0.0 ist auch ein Encoder für das freie Format DIRAC der BBC enthalten.

Ein großes Ärgernis älterer Versionen war die Verzögerung beim Starten und Stoppen der Wiedergabe. In der Version 1.0.0 soll sich die Wiedergabe sofort anhalten lassen. Zudem können Videos nun auch Bild für Bild angeschaut werden und es gibt eine genauere Geschwindigkeitskontrolle. Darüber hinaus unterstützt VLC seit der Version 1.0.0-RC On-the-fly-Recording für alle und Timeshift für die meisten Medienformate. Auch die Darstellung soll mittlerweile deutlich besser funktionieren.

VLC unterstützt auch die Codecs Dirac, MLP und RealVideo in Matroska-Containern und es gibt Verbesserungen beim Öffnen von RealMedia-Dateien. Zudem ist eine RTSP-Authentifizierung an Darwin-Streaming-Servern möglich, Zip-, Gzip- und Bzip2-Dateien werden automatisch entpackt, DVB-S- und ATSC-Karten unter Windows sowie DVB-Scanning unter Linux unterstützt und es gibt eine experimentelle Unterstützung von Blu-ray-Discs und AVCHD-Ordnern.

Unter Linux und Windows wurde das Skin-System (Skin2) verbessert, globale Hotkeys wurden eingeführt. Auch die Mac-Version erfuhr einige Verbesserungen und kann beispielsweise über die Mediatasten auf neueren Apple-Tastaturen gesteuert werden. Neu sind Portierungen von VLC auf Nokias mobile Linux-Distribution Maemo sowie eine experimentelle Portierung auf Windows CE.

Tja, genau das Suche ich schon andauernd vergeblich.

Witzigerweise verweist Google-Suche nach VLC DVB-Scanning (http://www.google.de/search?hl=de&q=VLC+DVB-Scanning&btnG=Google-Suche&meta=&aq=f&oq=) auf einen toten Forenlink bzw. das Forum ist derzeit nicht erreichbar.

Ansonsten findet man nur diese Newsmeldung bzw. ältere Einträge, die damit nix/kaum zu tun haben.

Ich wäre durchaus geneigt das mal wieder zu testen, obwohl meine bisherigen Erfahrungen mit VLC und DVB-S nicht gerade berauschend waren.

Die Entwickler des VLC media player haben die Version 1.0.2 veröffentlicht, die mehrere kritische Sicherheitslücken schließt. So lassen sich in den Demuxer-Plug-ins für MP4, ABVI und ASF mit präparierten Mediadateien Buffer Overflows provozieren und darüber Code einschleusen und starten. Neben dem Update stehen auch Patches im Repository bereit. Alternativ schlagen die Entwickler als Workaround vor, die betroffenen Plug-ins libmp4_plugin.*, libavi_plugin.* und libasf_plugin.* manuell im Installationsverzeichnis zu löschen – ohne das AVI Plug-in dürfte jedoch bei den meisten Anwendern kaum Freude aufkommen.

Darüber hinaus hat der Sicherheitsdienstleister Secunia auf mehrere Schwachstellen in FFmpeg, einer freien Tool- und Bibliothekssammlung zum Verarbeiten digitaler Video- und Audiodaten hingewiesen. Unter anderem nutzen VLC sowie MPlayer und xine die Sammlung. Die Fehler reichen von Null-Pointer-Dereferenzierungen und Speicherfehlern bis hin zu Heap Overflows in verschiedenen Funktionen zu Verarbeitungen diverser Medienformate. Angreifer können die Lücken ausnutzen, um ein System zum Absturz zu bringen oder zu kompromittieren. Laut Bericht sind die Fehler in der offiziellen Version 0.5 zu finden, einige der Fehler sollen aber bereits im Repository beseitigt sein.

Die Entwickler des quelloffenen Media Players VLC haben ihre Software auf die Versionsnummer 1.0.2 gehievt. Nachdem die aktuellen Quelltexte schon seit einiger Zeit veröffentlicht waren, stehen nun auch Binaries für Windows (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html) und Mac OS X zum Download bereit. Zu den Neuerungen gehört unter anderem die Fähigkeit, mit dem WMA-Professional-Codec komprimierte Musik zu dekodieren, ohne dass dazu die Microsoft-DLLs erforderlich sind. Der Umgang mit H.264-kodierten Videos soll sich verbessert haben.

In einem Posting auf der VLC-Mailingliste weisen die Entwickler auf einen Fehler in den Versionen 1.0.0 und 1.0.1 hin, der möglicherweise verhindert, dass sich der Player automatisch aktualisiert. Weil die Version 1.0.2 auch Sicherheitslöcher stopft, sollten betroffene Benutzer daher möglichst bald manuell auf die neue Ausgabe updaten – in der sei dann auch dieser Fehler behoben.

Die Entwickler von VLC haben die neue Version 1.0.3 des Media-Players vorgelegt, die vor allem ein Problem beim Einsatz unter Windows 7 beheben soll. Durch den Bug konnte sich die Qualität der Video-Ausgabe unter Microsofts neuer Windows-Version stark verschlechtern, was mit der neuen VLC-Version nicht mehr vorkommen soll. VLC erfülle in Version 1.0.3 alle technischen Anforderungen, um "kompatibel mit Windows 7" zu sein, betonen die Entwickler.

Zu weiteren Neuerungen gibt das Changelog Auskunft; unter anderem bietet VLC 1.0.3 neben einigen kleineren Bug-Fixes neue Deinterlace-Filter und die Ausgabe von Musik, die mit dem Codec WMA Professional komprimiert wurde. Der Codec kann Quellmaterial mit 24 Bit/96 kHz kodieren, die WMA-Professional-Ausgabe in VLC funktionierte in der Vorgängerversion noch nicht korrekt. Auf der Download-Seite des VLC-Projekts steht Version 1.0.3 des Media-Players in Binär-Paketen für Windows und Mac OS X sowie als Source-Code bereit.

Das Entwickler-Team hinter dem populären Video-Players VLC arbeitet nun auch an der Entwicklung einer Software zur Bearbeitung von Videos. Dieser wird VideoLAN Movie Creator (http://www.vlmc.org/) (VLMC) heißen.

Ziel sei es, ein kostenloses Programm anzubieten, dessen Features einem semiprofesionellen Einsatzbereich entsprechen, teilten die Entwickler mit. Trotzdem soll die Software so gestaltet sein, dass auch unerfahrene Nutzer sie leicht verwenden können.

Aktuell befindet sich die Software noch in einem sehr frühen Entwicklungsstadium. In Kürze soll aber bereits eine erste Pre-Release-Alpha veröffentlicht werden. Diese wird dann für Windows, Mac OS X und Linux zur Verfügung stehen.

Die Entwickler haben jetzt eine erste Preview der Wiedergabesoftware veröffentlicht. Die GPU-Beschleunigung funktioniert zunächst nur unter Windows und Linux. Sie soll die CPU-Auslastung auf unter zehn Prozent senken.

Die VideoLAN-Projektgruppe hat eine Vorschau auf Version 1.1.0 ihres VLC Media Player (Codename "The Luggage") freigegeben. Die Windows- und Linux-Versionen liefern Hardware-Beschleunigung für die Videodekodierung. Mac-Anwender müssen auf dieses Feature aufgrund mangelnder Unterstützung verzichten.

Wie Entwickler Jean-Baptiste Kempf in seinem Blog erklärt, funktioniert die GPU-Beschleunigung auch auf Systemen mit Ion-Grafik und Atom-Prozessor. Die CPU-Auslastung soll damit auf unter zehn Prozent sinken. Auch der Speicherverbrauch wurde optimiert.

Darüber hinaus aktualisiert die neue Player-Version einige Codecs und fügt neue hinzu. Die Anzeige von Untertiteln haben die Entwickler ebenfalls verbessert. Neu ist die Unterstützung für die Musikdatenbank CDDB unter Windows wie auch eine optimierte Integration in die Taskbar von Windows 7.

Installer-Varianten der Preview von VLC Media Player 1.1.0 stehen ab sofort für Windows und Mac OS X zum kostenlosen Download bereit. Auch der Quellcode ist auf der Projekt-Website verfügbar.

Version 1.0.6 des freien Medienspielers und -Streamers VLC media player beseitigt neun Sicherheitslücken und verbessert die Stabilität. Alle gefundenen Lücken wurden von den Entwickler im Rahmen der Arbeit an der kommenden Version 1.1.0 entdeckt. Zu den Lücken gehören Heap Overflows in den Audi-Decodern für DTS, MPEG und A/53 sowie Speicherzugriffsfehler in den AVI-, ASF- und Matroska-Demuxern.

Einige der Fehler lassen sich vermutlich zum Einschleusen und Ausführen von Code durch präparierte Media-Dateien ausnutzen. Dazu muss das Opfer solch eine Datei aber selbst herunterladen und öffnen – beispielsweise ein manipulierter Film von einem Filehoster.

Das Modul für Real Time Messaging Protocol (RTMP) wurde aus Sicherheitsgründen ganz entfernt, erst in Version 1.1.0 soll ein auf ffmpeg basierender Input-Filter wieder enthalten sein. Die neue Version steht bislang nur als Quelltext bereit. Die Binaries für Windows und Mac OS X dürften jedoch in Kürze folgen.

Die kommende Version 1.1.0 "The Luggage" unterstützt erstmals das Decoding etwa von H.264, VC-1/WMV und MPEG-Videos mit Hilfe der Grafikkarte unter Windows Vista, Windows 7 und Linux.

VLC 1.1 ist fast fertig und steht als Release Candidate für letzte Tests zur Verfügung. Derweil macht sich der Personalmangel im Videolan-Projekt bemerkbar. Die Version 1.0.6 erscheint wohl nicht mehr für Windows und Mac OS X.

Mit dem jetzt veröffentlichten Release Candidate des beliebten Videolan Clients (VLC) geht eine Entwicklungsphase zu Ende, die wichtige Neuerungen für die Videoabspielsoftware bringt. Das Videolan-Team hat eine Hardwarebeschleunigung für Videos unter Windows und Linux in den Media Player integriert, damit sich vor allem beim Abspielen von HD-Videos die CPU-Last deutlich verringert. Auch an der Unterstützung von Mobilgeräten wurde gearbeitet. VLC 1.1 soll auch auf Nokias N900 mit Maemo gut funktionieren. Seit der letzten Preview 4 haben die Videolan-Projektteilnehmer an einer VP8-Unterstützung, der Übersetzung und der Beseitigung diverser Fehler gearbeitet.

Binärdateien für Windows und Mac OS X der Version 1.0.6 lassen hingegen weiterhin auf sich warten. Im Quellcode sind zwar bereits einige Sicherheitslücken beseitigt, Binaries gibt es jedoch nur für Linux. Aktuell für Windows und Mac OS X ist weiterhin VLC 1.0.5.

In einem Blogeintrag erklärt einer der Entwickler die Probleme (http://www.remlab.net/op/vlc-1.0.6.shtml). Es fehlen laut Rémi Denix-Courmont Paketschnürer. Sowohl für Mac OS X als auch für Windows ist derzeit niemand verfügbar, der die entsprechenden Pakete aus dem alten Codezweig erstellen und bereitstellen könnte. Wer wegen der Sicherheitsprobleme in VLC 1.0.5 Bedenken hat, soll laut Denis-Courmont auf VLC 1.1.0-rc setzen.

VLC 1.1.0-rc gibt es als Binaries für Windows und Mac OS X. Alle anderen können auch auf den Quellcode (http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=76798) zurückgreifen, der unter anderem für Linux, Solaris und FreeBSD zur Verfügung steht.

Das Videolan-Team hat seinen freien Videoplayer VLC in der Version 1.1 veröffentlicht. Diese kann GPUs und DSP nutzen, um HD-Video hardwarebeschleunigt abzuspielen, ist insgesamt schneller, unterstützt einige neue Codecs und bietet einen Framework für Erweiterungen, so dass sich VLC künftig besser anpassen lässt.

Der Code für die Videoausgabe von VLC wurde für die neue Version 1.1 weitgehend neu geschrieben, so dass VLC nun in der Lage ist, GPUs und CPUs zur beschleunigten Darstellung von HD-Inhalten zu nutzen. Dies gilt zunächst für Windows Vista und Windows 7 sowie Linux. Unter Windows kann dank DxVA2 die Wiedergabe von H.264, VC-1 und MPEG-2 beschleunigt werden, unter Linux kommt dazu VAAPI zum Einsatz.

Allerdings raten die VLC-Entwickler Windows-Nutzern derzeit zu Chips von Nvidia, da die Windows-Treiber von ATI fehlerhaft seien und bislang keiner der VLC-Entwickler Zugriff auf entsprechende Intel-Hardware hat. Darüber hinaus kann auch der DSP OpenMax IL zur hardwarebeschleunigten Videowiedergabe genutzt werden. Der Chip ist in einigen Embeddedgeräten zu finden.

VLC 1.1 unterstützt zudem MKV HD und Codecs mit 7.1-Audio, Blu-ray-Untertitel MPEG-4 Lossless, den von Google als Open Source freigegebenen Codec VP8 und das darauf basierende Webvideoformat WebM, in das VLC Videos auch umwandeln kann. Auch das Web-Plugin und die Streamingunterstützung wurden verbessert.

In Sachen Audio kann VLC 1.1 auch mit AMR-NB, Mpeg-4 ALS, Vorbis 6.1/7.1, FLAC 6.1/7.1 und WMAS umgehen, unterstützt in seinem Qt4-Interface Playlisten und kann unter Windows CDDB-Informationen zu Audio-CDs anzeigen. Auch DVD-Audio-Dateien (.aob) werden nun abgespielt.

VLC wird schneller und erweiterbar

Insgesamt soll VLC deutlich schneller sein, versprechen die Entwickler - bis zu 40 Prozent bei der Wiedergabe von HD-Auflösungen. Dazu trägt die neu entwickelte Videoausgabe ebenso bei wie Assembler-Optimierungen vor allem für SSE3 und SSE4 sowie Arm Neon, einige neu geschriebene Module sowie in Erweiterungen ausgelagerte Funktionen.

Die Einführung von Erweiterungen ist dann auch die zweite ganz wesentliche Neuerung: VLC 1.1 verfügt über ein Framework für Addons und Skripte, mit deren Hilfe VLC an die eigenen Wünsche angepasst werden kann. Es ist in Lua realisiert und unterstützt zwei wesentliche Typen von Skripten: Content-Addons, die in die Playliste integriert werden, sowie funktionale Erweiterungen wie eine Metadatensuche im Web oder das Nachschlagen von Untertiteln.

Entwickler sollen von einer vereinfachten libVLC profitieren, die ohne Ausnahmen auskommt und sich daher besser in C-Code integrieren lassen soll. Zudem wird Phonen als Backend auf allen Plattformen genutzt und es gibt neue C++-Bindings.

Shoutcast-Modul entfernt

Das bislang in VLC integrierte Shoutcastmodul wurde in der Version 1.1 aus lizenzrechtlichen Gründen entfernt. AOL-Mitarbeiter hätten das VLC-Projekt im letzten Jahr wiederholt aufgefordert, die Shoutcast-Lizenzbedingungen einzuhalten, was aber aus Sicht der VLC-Entwickler für Open-Source-Software nicht möglich ist. Statt Shoutcast soll künftig das freie Pendant Icecast Directory in VLC unterstützt werden. Darüber hinaus verweisen die Entwickler auf das neue Erweiterungssystem, über das sich auch Shoutcast wieder einbinden ließe.

VLC 1.1 steht ab sofort im Quelltext (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-sources.html) für Windows unter videolan.org/vlc (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html) zum Download bereit. Für Mac OS X gibt es Test-Binarys für Intel-Systeme und bei Linux verweisen die VLC-Entwickler auf die Distributionen, über die Pakete zur Verfügung gestellt werden sollen.

Der neue VLC Media Player 1.1.0 unterstützt die Dekodierung von Videos über den Grafikchip, doch ATI- und Intel-Treiber machen Probleme.

Der VLC Media Player kann nahezu alle Video- und Audio-Formate ohne Installation weiterer Codecs abspielen und ist in der neuen Version 1.1.0 auch in der Lage, Videos über den Grafikchip zu dekodieren. Allerdings weisen die Programmierer darauf hin, dass dies bisher nur mit Nvidia-Grafikkarten richtig funktioniert.

Der aktuelle ATI-Grafiktreiber Catalyst 10.6 unterstützt die in VLC verwendete Funktion bisher noch nicht, wie ein Sprecher von ATI gegenüber KitGuru bestätigt hat. Allerdings arbeitet ATI an dem Problem und verspricht eine baldige Lösung. Im Gegensatz dazu scheint Intel den Entwicklern von VLC bisher keine Unterstützung gewährt zu haben.

Das Videolan-Team hat seinen freien Media-Player VLC in der Version 1.1.1 veröffentlicht. Die neue Version beseitigt in erster Linie Fehler, bietet für Nutzer von ATI-Grafikarten aber auch eine wesentliche Verbesserung.

Gut einen Monat nach VLC 1.1.0 erscheint mit VLC 1.1.1 ein Bugfix-Update des freien Media-Players. Die Version 1.1.0 wurde in dieser Zeit mehr als 17 Millionen Mal heruntergeladen.

Die mit VLC 1.1.0 eingeführte, aber auf Nvidia-GPUs beschränkte, hardwarebeschleunigte Videowiedergabe, wird in der Version 1.1.1 auch auf ATI-Grafikchips unterstützt. Allerdings funktioniert dies bislang nur mit DirectX Video Acceleration (DxVA) 2.0, was Windows ab Vista mitbringt. Zudem wird ATIs Catalyst-Treiber in der Version 10.7 benötigt.

Darüber hinaus enthält die neue Version vor allem kleine Korrekturen und Verbesserungen, unter anderem an der libVLC, der Videoausgabe unter Windows, diversen Interfaces sowie Decodern und Demuxern. Zudem wurden die Übersetzungen aktualisiert und einige Fehler, die zu Abstürzen führen können, beseitigt.

Das Open-Source-Projekt Videolan hat am Donnerstagmorgen (Ortszeit) erneut eine aktualisierte Fassung seines kostenfreien Mediaplayers VLC in Version 1.1.4 zur Verfügung gestellt.

Das Programm wurde diesmal nur in einem einzigen Punkt überarbeitet: Ein generells Loch im Windows-Betriebssystem macht es Angreifern leicht, die Kontrolle über einen Rechner zu übernehmen. Der Bug wurde geschlossen, alle Benutzer sollten die VLC-Softwaree unbedingt aktualisieren, weil sie ebenfalls betroffen ist.

Der Entwickler Alexander Alisani alias mysoogal hat ein Browserplugin auf Basis von VLC veröffentlicht, das per HTML5 in Webseiten eingebettete Videos in den Browsern Internet Explorer, Safari und Firefox ab Version 3 abspielt.

Das von Alisani veröffentlichte Theora-Browser-Plugin basiert auf dem freien Mediaplayer VLC, der von unnötigem Ballast befreit wurde. So bleiben nur die zum Abspielen von Theora-Dateien notwendigen Funktionen. So ist es möglich, per HTML5-Tag eingebettete Videodateien im Format Ogg Theora auch in Browsern abzuspielen, die das Format von Hause aus nicht unterstützen. Auch eine Darstellung der Videos im Vollbild ist möglich.

Dem Entwickler zufolge funktioniert das Theora-Browser-Plugin derzeit mit den Browsern Safari 4 und 5, Firefox ab Version 3 sowie im Internet Explorer 7 und 8. Getestet wurde die Software bislang nur unter Windows 7, sie sollte aber auch unter Windows XP und 2000 funktionieren, gibt Alisani an.

Im Downloadpaket (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=5KQCYXUQ) enthalten ist neben dem Plugin auch eine jQuery-Klasse, mit der sich VLC in die eigene Webseite einbetten und steuern lässt.

Die Entwickler des bekannten Multimedia-Tools VLC-Player planen, ihr Werk zu relizenzieren. Künftig soll das Projekt statt unter der GPLv2 unter der LGPL 2.1 erscheinen. Dadurch wäre es möglich mit dem Source Code des Programms, auch proprietäre Software zu entwickeln. Dies gestaltet sich jedoch schwerer als gedacht, da absolut jeder Helfer des Projekts der Änderung zustimmen muss.

Ziel des Teams von VideoLAN ist es augenscheinlich, Projekte wie eine VLC-Player-App für Apples iOS-System veröffentlichen zu können. Dies wurde bislang unterbunden, da Apple keine quelloffene Software in seinem App Store sehen will. Eine Veröffentlichung des Tools unter der LGPL 2.1 würde es dementsprechend erlauben, geschlossene Projekte aus dem Quellcode des Tools zu schaffen.

Bis zur angestrebten Relizenzierung muss der Kern des Teams jedoch noch einige Hürden überwinden. Da das Programm aus zahlreichen Codeschnipseln besteht, muss jede Person, die ihren Teil zum Player beigetragen hat, dem Wechsel zustimmen. Bislang haben circa 80 Prozent der Verantwortlichen ihr Einverständnis erteilt. Die restlichen Programmierer, versucht man seit einigen Wochen ohne Erfolg zu erreichen. Dementsprechend wurde ein Aufruf an die fehlenden Coder gerichtet, dass sie sich schnellstmöglich beim Kernteam melden sollten.

VideoLAN erklärte, dass man im Fall einer Gegenstimme auf die vollständige Umstellung verzichten wolle. Die bisher Befragten hatten jedoch allesamt nichts gegen die LGPL 2.1.

Die Änderung des Lizenzsystems soll mit dem Update VLC 1.2 erfolgen. Einen konkreten Termin für das Release gibt es jedoch noch nicht.

Unabhängig davon, ob es zu einer Veränderung der Lizenz kommen wird: Der Endanwender wird vermutlich nichts von der Relizenzierung bemerken. Ein positiver Aspekt des Ganzen könnte vorerst die Veröffentlichung einer VLC-Player-App für iPhone, iPod oder iPad sein. Die App war übrigens kurzfristig bei iTunes verfügbar und wurde dann nach Lizenzstreitigkeiten daraus entfernt.

Der Hacker Austen Dicken hat sich eine Entwicklerversion des VLC-Players für Android angesehen. Sie soll bereits funktional sein. Eine offizielle Android-Version des Multimediaplayers ist noch nicht angekündigt.

Austen Dicken hat sich vor wenigen Tagen den Code von VLC für Android angesehen. Die Applikation sei bereits weitgehend funktional, schreibt er in seinem Blog. Der Code ließ sich mit dem Android NDK v6b problemlos kompilieren. Eine Anleitung stellt das Video-LAN-Projekt bereit. Es hat bislang noch keine offizielle Android-Version angekündigt.

Dicken stellt auch zwei verschiedene Binärversionen von VLC bereit. Er betont, dass es sich um seine eigenen Versionen handelt und appelliert an Nutzer, sich nicht bei den Video-LAN-Entwicklern über etwaige Fehler zu beschweren. Die beiden verschiedenen Versionen sind für Geräte mit oder ohne zusätzliche FPU kompiliert. Die Unterstützung muss beim Kompilieren des Sourcecodes explizit angegeben werden. Ob ein Gerät Neon-Erweiterungen unterstützt, lässt sich über den Inhalt der Informationsdatei /proc/cpuinfo einsehen.

Den Sourcecode hat Dicken aus dem entsprechenden Git-Repository des Video-LAN-Projekts. Eine Anleitung zum Kompilieren von VLC haben die Entwickler auf ihren Wiki-Seiten bereitgestellt (http://wiki.videolan.org/AndroidCompile). Die vorkompilierten Binärdateien für Geräte mit oder ohne FPU hat Dicken in seinem Blogeintrag verlinkt (http://cvpcs.org/blog/2011-09-18/videolan_for_android_pre-alpha#downloads). Der VLC-Player in Version 2.0 naht mit großen Schritten. Für Linux und Mac OS X (http://download.videolan.org/pub/testing/vlc-2.0.0-rc1/) gibt es jetzt bereits einen ersten Release Candidate (Windows-Benutzer können zur Nightly (http://nightlies.videolan.org/) greifen). Was zuerst auffällt: eine völlig veränderte Optik. Man hat das Gefühl, einen völlig neuen – vielleicht sogar “reiferen” Player vor sich zu haben.

Lobenswert: das Anbieten und Erkennen von UPnP-Servern im Netzwerk.Der VLC-Player macht einen großen Schritt nach vorne und dürfte bei finalem Erscheinen neue Benutzer für sich begeistern können. Beim ersten Start fällt die deutlich überarbeitete Oberfläche auf. Unter Mac OS X gibt es nun eine schwarze Oberfläche und neu sortierte Elemente. Beide orientieren sich stärker an modernen Mediaplayern. Zudem wird der neue Vollbildmodus von Mac OS X unterstützt. Ein VLC-Videofenster integriert sich also vollständig in die Spaces. Die alte Version konnte das noch nicht. Allerdings wirkt das beim Release Candidate noch etwas hakelig.

Unter Linux hat sich an der Qt-basierten Benutzeroberfläche optisch wenig verändert. Die Einstellungen können durchsucht werden und die Effekte-Benutzeroberfläche wurde überarbeitet. Außerdem wurde die Anbindung an Pulseaudio verbessert.

Die Entwickler haben das Konfigurationschaos des Players behoben. Selbst VLC-Kenner dürften sich darüber freuen, dass die mehr als 40 Caching-Optionen laut Entwickler nun auf vier reduziert wurden.
Neu geschriebene Codebestandteile und Blu-ray-Unterstützung

Die Entwickler haben mit VLC 2.0 auch Teile des Codes überarbeitet. Unter anderem sollen der Videokern und die Ausgangsfunktionen stark überarbeitet worden sein. Zudem kann jetzt fast jeder Videofilter transcodiert werden.

VLC 2.0 kann jetzt theoretisch auch mit Daten einer Blu-ray-Disc umgehen. Die Funktion wird aber noch als experimentell eingestuft. Zudem wird HTTP Live Streaming unterstützt und experimentelles Hardware-Encoding über einen Broadcom-Crystal-HD-Chip beherrscht VLC jetzt auch. Das dürfte vor allem einige Netbooknutzer freuen, die diesen Zusatzchip haben. Außerdem wurde die Anzahl der unterstützten Codecs erhöht. Dazu gehört auch ProRes422. Der OS-X-Build setzt einen Rechner voraus, der Quartz-Extreme unterstützt.
Release Candidate für Linux muss kompiliert werden

Ein fertiges Kompilat gibt es für Linux-Nutzer nicht. Der Quellcode ließ sich unter Ubuntu 11.10 problemlos kompilieren, vorausgesetzt, die zahlreichen Entwicklerbibliotheken sind installiert, darunter die Entwicklungsumgebung für Qt4. Wer die Software kompiliert, sollte sich nicht über die Deprecated-Meldungen wundern. Auf einem Intel Core 2 Duo mit 2.66 GHz dauerte das Kompilieren etwa fünf Minuten.

Für Windows gibt es ebenfalls eine fertige Testversion. Die Windows-Version wird aber einige Einschränkungen haben. Windows XP mit Service Pack 2 ist Pflicht. Ältere Windows-Systeme werden nicht mehr unterstützt. Dafür gehört der Windows-Port noch zu denen, die nicht auf UTF-8 im Dateisystem setzen. Bei Linux und Mac OS X wird das vorausgesetzt.

Der VLC-Kern ist übrigens für eine Portierung auf OS/2 vorbereitet. Das ist ein Betriebssystem von IBM, das Mitte der 1990er Jahre weit verbreitet war.
Weg frei für Apps

Vorbereitungen gibt es im VLC-Kern auch für Android- und iOS-Apps. Während ein Android-Port keine Besonderheit ist, ist das bei iOS anders. Denn da gab es bereits in der Vergangenheit Ärger mit der Lizenz.

Eine der großen und weitreichenden Neuerungen von VLC 2.0 betrifft diese Lizenz. Das Team wechselt von der GNU Public License v2 (GPL) auf die Lesser GNU Public License v2.1 (LGPL). Damit dürfte es für andere jetzt einfacher werden, den VLC-Player auf vergleichsweise neue, aber geschlossene Plattformen zu portieren. Zwar gibt es beispielsweise einen VLC-Player für iOS, aber schon lange nicht mehr über den App Store von Apple.

Applidium konnte seinen Port Anfang 2011 nicht mehr im App Store anbieten, da sich der VLC-Entwickler Rémi Denis-Courmont wegen eines Lizenzverstoßes bei Apple beschwert hat. Er wurde dabei durch die Free Software Foundation unterstützt. Die Beschwerde löste innerhalb der VLC-Entwicklergemeinde eine Diskussion aus, denn nicht jeder war mit der Beschwerde einverstanden.

Den ersten Release Candidate des VLC-Players 2.0 gibt es für Linux und Mac OS X im Downloadverzeichnis. Mac-Nutzer können das Disk Image für Intel-CPUs (32 oder 64-Bit) oder PowerPC-CPUs herunterladen. Für Linux-Nutzer gibt es ein Tarball, das allerdings erst kompiliert werden muss.

Auf "großen" Rechnern ist der VLC Player, der vor kurzem in der finalen Version 2.0 veröffentlicht worden ist, ein Pflichtprogramm für jeden, der sich Videos ansieht. Nun gibt es den Player auch in einer (inoffiziellen) Variante für einige Android-Smartphones.

Wie 'Droidlife (http://www.droid-life.com/2012/03/01/vlc-media-player-for-android-hits-beta-still-a-work-in-progress-but-ready-for-download/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+DroidLife+%28droid+life%29Unofficial)' unter Berufung auf den entsprechenden Entwickler-Thread im 'xda-developers (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1517415)'-Forum berichtet, steht der VLC Player seit einigen Tagen auch als Android-Variante zum Download bereit. Bei "VLC für Android" handelt es sich derzeit noch um eine Beta-Version, genaue Informationen sowie die Installationsdateien (als .apk) sind ebenfalls im Beitrag auf xda zu finden.

Unterstützt werden allerdings nicht alle Geräte und Android-Versionen. Beim Betriebssystem wird Android 2.3 ("Gingerbread") und Android 4.0 ("Ice Cream Sandwich") vorausgesetzt, zusätzlich dazu werden nur einige Chipsets unterstützt: ARMv6/ARM11, ARMv7a/Cortex-A8/NEON und ARMv7a/Cortex-A9.

Xda-Entwickler adridu59 beschreibt in seinem Beitrag genauer welche Installationsdatei zu welcher "Prozessoren-Familien" gehört und führt auch die gängigsten Geräte-"Plattformen" auf:

Bei den Snapdragon-Chipsets sind die unterschiedlichen Generationen bzw. Familien zu beachten, auch hier sollte man am besten sein jeweiliges Gerät auf der Übersicht bei 'Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snapdragon_(system_on_chip)#Current_and_future_spe%20cifications)' suchen (jeweils ganz rechts zu finden).

Das Videolan-Projekt hat eine offizielle Betaversion seiner VLC-Applikation für Android angekündigt. Sie soll in wenigen Tagen über Google Play erhältlich sein.

n wenigen Tagen soll eine Beta des VLC-Mediaplayers für Android in Google Play erhältlich sein. In seiner offiziellen Ankündigung hat das Videolan-Team auch einige Details zu dem lang erwarteten Mediaplayer für Android preisgegeben. Bislang ist die Liste der offiziell unterstützten Geräte recht kurz, die Entwickler hoffen auf Feedback durch Anwender.
Unterstützung für zahlreiche SoCs

Zu den vom Video-LAN-Team empfohlenen Smartphones gehören unter anderem das Samsung Galaxy Nexus mit seinem Omap-4460-SoC und das Motorola Defy mit dem Omap-3610-SoC von Texas Instruments sowie das Galaxy S3 mit dem Samsung-eigenen Exynos-SoC. Das HTC Desire und das Galaxy Nexus One stehen mit ihren QSD8250-SoCs von Snapdragon ebenfalls auf der Liste. Außerdem läuft VLC für Android auch auf dem HTC One X, der einen Tegra-3-SoC von Nvidia enthält.

Der VLC-Mediaplayer funktioniert unter Android 2.1 bis zur aktuellen Version 4 alias Ice Cream Sandwich. Die Applikation soll sämtliche Multimediadateien und -formate abspielen können und der PC-Version in nichts nachstehen, verspricht das Videolan-Team. Ausgewählt werden können beispielsweise verschiedene Untertitel oder Tonspuren. Auch Netzwerkstreams können abgespielt werden. Die Applikation erstellt eine Bibliothek, die durchsucht werden kann.

Experimenteller Hardwaredecodierer

Auf SoCs mit Mehrkern-CPUs, etwa dem Cortex-A7, -A9 oder -A15, werden alle Kerne zum Decodieren verwendet. Den Zugriff auf vorhandene Hardwaredecodierer bezeichnet das Videolan-Team noch als experimentell.

Auf der Webseite (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-android.html) ist eine Liste der Geräte und der Formate, die sie per Softwaredecoder abspielen können. Die Entwickler versprechen aber, die Leistungsfähigkeit des Players noch weiter zu erhöhen. Dafür sammeln sie Spenden, mit denen die Weiterentwicklung des Projekts finanziert werden soll.

Gerüchte seit 2011

Anfang April 2012 hatten die Entwickler des Videolan-Projekts vor einer gefälschten Version eines VLC-Players für Android gewarnt und die unautorisierte Version sogar als Scam bezeichnet. Gleichzeitig bestätigte das Team, dass es an einer Version für Android arbeite. Erste Gerüchte über einen offiziellen VLC-Player für Android gab es bereits 2011.

Bislang gibt es im Googles Play Store nur eine Applikation für die Steuerung des VLC-Players über das Netzwerk, das vom Videolan-Team stammt.

Da ist das Ding! Lange erwartet, nun endlich für Smartphone erschienen: der VLC Media Player für Android (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.videolan.vlc.betav7neon). Noch in einer Beta, dennoch klasse: spielt Audio und Video in allen möglichen Formaten ab, zudem können direkt Streams aus dem Internet konsumiert werden. Die Oberfläche ist minimalistisch, dennoch funktional.

In den Einstellungen können feste Stammverzeichnisse festgelegt werden, natürlich lassen sich auch direkt Dateien öffnen. Videos verschiedener Auflösungen lassen sich an euer Display anpassen – horizontal oder vertikal eben. Ich denke, hier wächst große Konkurrenz für die gängigen Player auf der Android-Plattform heran.

VLC ist im Ansatz eine gute Software/Produktpalette.

Leider funktionieren viele Features nicht richtig.

Neulich wollte ich ein Container-Format in ein anderes überführen.

Wie nennt sich das doch gleich; muxen.

Hat aber irgendwie nicht richtig geklappt.

Vielleicht sollte die Internet-Community mit vereinten Kräften mal richtig spenden.

Vielleicht wirds dann besser.

Das VLC Mobile Team des quelloffenen VideoLAN-Projekts hat eine erste Vorabfassung des VLC Media Player für Android-Geräte mit ARMv7-CPU in den Google Play Store gestellt. Sie trägt die Versionsnummer 0.0.1 und läuft ab Android 2.1 aufwärts. Die Entwickler warnen wortreich davor, zuviel von der VLC-Beta zu erwarten: Die App begrüßt den Nutzer mit den Worten "könnte niedliche Kätzchen töten, das eigene Haus zerstören und die Apokalypse der Maya starten".

Noch liefe der Player nicht stabil, Hardware-beschleunigte Wiedergabe funktioniere nicht auf allen unterstützten Geräten; auch sei die Beta langsamer als die zu erwartende finale Version. Dafür könne sie aber unter anderem bereits Untertitel anzeigen und Videos mit mehreren Audiospuren korrekt wiedergeben; mehr zu den Funktionen findet sich in der Beschreibung von Google Play.

[Update, 2. Juli, 17:30]: Bei der ARM-CPU muss es sich um eine NEON-kompatible Version des ARMv7 handeln; aus diesem Grund heißt die Vorabversion im Google Play Store "VLC Beta (NEON version)".

[Update, 3. Juli, 8:45]: Wer Google Play meiden möchte, kann die Beta-Version des VLC für Android auch direkt beim VideoLAN-Projekt herunterladen. Dort gibt es auch Nightly Builds für anderen ARM-CPUs (Tegra 2, ARMv6 mit und ohne FPU).

Einige Entwickler des VideoLAN-Projekts haben auf der Crowdfunding-Plattform Kickstarter um Geld für die Entwicklung einer Windows-8- und -RT-Version des VLC Media Player geworben. Mit Erfolg: Die erhofften 40.000 britischen Pfund sind zusammengekommen; vier Tage vor Ende des Aufrufs verzeichnete das Projekt eine Spendensumme von 42.763 Pfund.

Mit dem Geld will das Team die Full-Time-Entwicklung des Open-Source-Medienspielers als App für Windows 8 und Windows RT finanzieren. Eine erste Version für Windows 8 soll in etwa drei Monaten fertig sein, eine Fassung für das ARM-basierte Windows RT anschließend folgen.

Leider funktioniert mit VLC 2.1.1 die UPnP bzw. DLNA Funktion bei mir nicht mehr, was ich manchmal für eine direkte Übertragung von DVB-Aufnahmen eines Panasonic-Receivers auf den PC benötige. Sowohl mit der 32bit als auch 64bit Version stürzt der Player ab, sobald ich in der Wiedergabeliste nach UPnP-Servern suchen lasse. :( Habe darauf wieder die alte 2.0.8 installiert, die bisher ganz gut für diesen Zweck verwendbar war.

Die 3.0-Version von VLC soll Videos auf Google Streaming-Stick Chromecast übertragen können. Nun gibt es erste Nightly Builds, die die Funktion (rudimentär) unterstützen.

Die von vielen VLC-Nutzern heiß ersehnte Unterstützung von Googles Streaming-Stick Chromecast soll mit VLC-Version 3.0 kommen. Inzwischen hat das VideoLAN-Team erste Nightly Builds mit der Funktion bereitgestellt. Einen "Cast"-Knopf gibt es bislang nicht, man muss den Chromecast im eigenen Netzwerk im Menü unter Tools/Renderer Output auswählen.

Richtig zuverlässig arbeitet die neue Funktion laut Ars Technica noch nicht (http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2016/06/vlc-3-0-nightlies-arrive-with-sort-of-working-chromecast-support/) – aber es handelt sich ja schließlich auch erst um sehr frühe Entwicklungsversionen, bis zur finalen 3.0-Version wird es noch einige Zeit dauern. Nightlies mit Chromecast-Unterstützung lassen sich hier für Windows (32-/64-Bit) und Linux herunterladen (http://nightlies.videolan.org/), eine OS-X-Version gibt es bislang nicht.
