Nach mehr als zweijähriger Arbeit haben die OpenELEC-Entwickler die erste stabile Version ihrer Mediacenter-Distribution veröffentlicht. OpenELEC basiert auf dem XB Media Center 10.1 (XBMC).

Mit OpenELEC (http://www.openelec.tv/) können Anwender ihren Multimedia-PC nutzen, um in die Röhre zu schauen oder DVDs und CDs abzuspielen. Das System soll auf einem modernen Rechner innerhalb von zehn Sekunden booten. Laut den Entwicklern ist OpenELEC innerhalb von fünf Minuten installiert. Ist eine Internetverbindung vorhanden, aktualisiert sich das System automatisch.
OpenELEC 1.0 basiert auf einem Kernel 3.1rc10, Xorg 1.10.4 und Mesa 7.11. Das Betriebssystem belegt auf der Festplatte zwischen 80 MB und 130 MB. Verschiedene Erweiterungen sollen die von XBMC 10.1 bekannten Funktionalitäten ausbauen und die Bedienung des Mediacenters so einfach wie möglich gestalten. Dazu zählen beispielsweise Add-ons für die Netzwerkkonfiguration und zusätzliche Hardware wie LCD-Displays. Nutzer sollen alle Einstellungen mit Hilfe einer IR-Fernbedienung anpassen können. Neben DVB unterstützt OpenELEC auch IP TV, Downloads aus Newsgroups und BitTorrent.
Das Mediacenter-System läuft auf den i386- und x86_64-Plattformen und kann neben Festplatten auch von USB-Sticks oder SD-Karten gestartet werden. Für Rechner mit ION- oder Fusion-Chipsätzen, Apple TV oder Xtreamer Ultra TV bieten die Entwickler optimierte Systeme an. OpenELEC wird von den Firmen Xtreamer, Zotac und Pulse Eight unterstützt. The OpenELEC 6.0.2 release has been published. Users running OpenELEC 5.95.1 thru 6.0.1 with auto-update enabled will be prompted on-screen to reboot and apply the update once it has been downloaded. Users running older OpenELEC releases or with auto-update disabled will need to manually update. If you would like to update from an older OpenELEC release please read update instructions/advice on the Wiki before updating. Manual update files can be obtained from the downloads page.
OpenELEC 6.0.2 is a maintenance release but has some new features backported from our upcoming OpenELEC-7.0 release. The main fixes are:

add more USB-WLAN drivers to WeTek Play and WeTek OpenELEC box builds
