Nach mehr als zweijähriger Arbeit haben die OpenELEC-Entwickler die erste stabile Version ihrer Mediacenter-Distribution veröffentlicht. OpenELEC basiert auf dem XB Media Center 10.1 (XBMC).

Mit OpenELEC können Anwender ihren Multimedia-PC nutzen, um in die Röhre zu schauen oder DVDs und CDs abzuspielen. Das System soll auf einem modernen Rechner innerhalb von zehn Sekunden booten. Laut den Entwicklern ist OpenELEC innerhalb von fünf Minuten installiert. Ist eine Internetverbindung vorhanden, aktualisiert sich das System automatisch.

OpenELEC 1.0 basiert auf einem Kernel 3.1rc10, Xorg 1.10.4 und Mesa 7.11. Das Betriebssystem belegt auf der Festplatte zwischen 80 MB und 130 MB. Verschiedene Erweiterungen sollen die von XBMC 10.1 bekannten Funktionalitäten ausbauen und die Bedienung des Mediacenters so einfach wie möglich gestalten. Dazu zählen beispielsweise Add-ons für die Netzwerkkonfiguration und zusätzliche Hardware wie LCD-Displays. Nutzer sollen alle Einstellungen mit Hilfe einer IR-Fernbedienung anpassen können. Neben DVB unterstützt OpenELEC auch IP TV, Downloads aus Newsgroups und BitTorrent.

Das Mediacenter-System läuft auf den i386- und x86_64-Plattformen und kann neben Festplatten auch von USB-Sticks oder SD-Karten gestartet werden. Für Rechner mit ION- oder Fusion-Chipsätzen, Apple TV oder Xtreamer Ultra TV bieten die Entwickler optimierte Systeme an. OpenELEC wird von den Firmen Xtreamer, Zotac und Pulse Eight unterstützt. Also ich hab's noch nicht getestet, weiß auch noch nicht wie auch dazu kommen werde.

U.a. ist nicht klar, ob meine TV-Karte unterstützt wird. Weiterhin finde ich es besch....eiden, dass man das System auf USB-Stick 1 entpacken muss, um es auf USB-Stick 2 installieren zu können?!?

Known issues and limitations
    * GPU Temperature is not shown in XBMC on some nvidia GPU hardware (bug in driver)
    * Component Video does not work in the Apple TV image
    * If you use the installer to install on a new drive, be sure there is at least one partition, otherwise the drive will be not detected

OpenELEC is an embedded Linux distribution that aims to allow people to use their Home Theatre PC (HTPC) in the same manner as any other device attached to your TV - like a DVD player or Sky box. Turn on your box, and OpenELEC is ready for usage in less than 10 seconds - as fast as some DVD players. A simple remote control is all you need to complete the experience. With OpenELEC you do not need to worry about updating, as the whole operating system will seamlessly self-update everything automatically when connected to the Internet (this includes XBMC). Die OpenELEC-Entwickler haben Version 4.0 ihrer Mediacenter-Distribution veröffentlicht. Neben einer Aktualisierung des darunter liegenden Linux-Systems haben die Entwickler auch neue Funktionen hinzugefügt. OpenELEC 4.0 bringt bereits XBMC 13 mit.

Mit der jetzt veröffentlichten Version 4.0 unterstützt die Mediacenter-Distribution OpenELEC erstmals das Booten auf UEFI-Hardware. Syslinux wurde aktualisiert und bei den Builds für Raspberry Pi kommen der neueste Bootloader und Firmware zum Einsatz. Das zugrundeliegende Linux-System nutzt jetzt einen Kernel 3.14, der viele Bugfixes und neue Treiber für die in modernen HTPC-Systemen verwendete Hardware mitbringt. Für Systemstart, Power-Management, Hardware-Erkennung und -Konfiguration setzt auch OpenELEC mit Version 4.0 auf Systemd. Daneben hat das OpenELEC-Team das Buildsystem überarbeitet.

Fast alle der enthaltenen Pakete wurden auf neuere Versionen aktualisiert, dazu zählen etwa Xorg 1.15, Mesa 10.1 und die Grafiktreiber für Nvidia (331.67) und Intel (2.99.911). Für den Einsatz mit AMD-Grafik-Hardware wird nun statt des fglrx-Treibers der neue Open-Source-Treiber 7.3.0 auf der Basis von VDPAU verwendet, der stabiler und leistungsfähiger sein soll. Dieses Release soll zudem erstmals Unterstützung für 4K und TTS (text-to-speech) mitbringen.

Das frisch veröffentlichte freie Mediacenter XBMC 13 "Gotham" hat es bereits in dieses Release geschafft. XBMC 13 beherrscht stereoskopische 3D-Wiedergabe und bessere Touch-Unterstützung. Außerdem soll das Durchsuchen von Medienbibliotheken und Starten von Videos auf einem Raspberry Pi nun deutlich schneller laufen.

OpenELEC 4.0 steht über die Projekt-Website für verschiedene Architekturen zum Download bereit.

The OpenELEC 6.0.2 release has been published. Users running OpenELEC 5.95.1 thru 6.0.1 with auto-update enabled will be prompted on-screen to reboot and apply the update once it has been downloaded. Users running older OpenELEC releases or with auto-update disabled will need to manually update. If you would like to update from an older OpenELEC release please read update instructions/advice on the Wiki before updating. Manual update files can be obtained from the downloads page.

OpenELEC 6.0.2 is a maintenance release but has some new features backported from our upcoming OpenELEC-7.0 release. The main fixes are:

    full RaspberryPi 3 support including onboard WLAN and Bluetooth
    fixes to our settings addon, including fixes for backup/restore
    add more USB-WLAN drivers to WeTek Play and WeTek OpenELEC box builds
    Add a new experimental Amlogic CEC driver for WeTek Play and WeTek OpenELEC box.
