Time for another Alpha release of the next generation in HTPC software: MediaPortal 2!A lot has been done since the autumn release, so the path to Alpha 2 is nearly gone. Please be aware that this is still an Alpha release, meaning that it isn't either feature complete nor bug free, and therefor is not meant to be used on a productive system. Make sure that you read the instructions at the end of this news regarding installation, upgrade and extension compatibility.Summary of changesHere is a list of major changes since the autumn release: The internal player handling of MediaPortal 2 got extended to control an unlimited number of players, which allows us nice things like Video Backgrounds Better input handling including support for key shortcuts (see Keyboard shortcuts) Copy and paste support for Text Controls / Virtual Keyboard Added UPnP compression support, which improves network performance Reworked the Fanart handling both on server (extensible provider structure) and client (faster loading) Multiple monitors are now supported correctly, MP2-Client can also run fullscreen on secondary screen Integrated news plugin, using news ticker in home screen Support for more power options. This will be used later for an advanced shutdown menu (WiP) Support for reading metadata from video MP4-tags Support for picture geo location (lookup country, state, city from GPS coordinates inside EXIF) Several tweaks done to further improve performance And last but not least: The new skin for MediaPortal 2 - Titanium!

We are very happy to present you the final version of MediaPortal 1.6.0 today. No new features were added between the Pre Release and the Final Release but a lot of bugs encountered by Team internal testing or because of our community who reported them in our bugforum have been fixed. Enjoy it!
Highlights of this releaseMany of the changes in this release are things that you might not notice at first, but they are designed to improve the stability of MediaPortal moving forwards for the next few releases.Using SkinSettings/ExpressionsSkin Settings and Expressions are really powerful. Skin designers are going to be doing some amazing things with them in the near future. We have already been testing a home screen editor entirely within the MediaPortal GUI. Look for this in Area 51 very soon.Separate the WindowsPlugins to individual filesThis is one for the developers. Since MediaPortal started, the core plugins (My Videos, My Music, My Pictures, etc.) have been stored in a single file called WindowsPlugins.dll. This means that a lot of code has been loaded that isn't always needed. Also, making a change to one plugin often resulted in another plugin developing a new bug. We can't carry on like that, so the plugins are now in their own self-contained files. This will make things more stable and easier to fix/improve in future.Attention: This change made us 'bump' the plugin subsystems, so there is a chance you need an updated plugin to be compatible with the 1.7.0 Pre Release.Enhancements to the TV and Video OSDsTV recording thumbs and comskip markers were not properly shown in the TV and Video OSDs. This is fixed.Improvements to the InstallerYou probably have the LAV Filters package installed to get the best quality playback of most video files, and TitanExtended installed to provide skin files for your plugins. The installer correctly detects the installed version, and only offers to install these if a newer version is available.Wake On LANMediaPortal can now wake your server if it is in sleep mode and you want to access your files.Add MediaInfo For Files in the BackgroundWe use a code library called MediaInfo to obtain certain information about video files when you play them. This information can be displayed by MediaPortal. Up to now, it has only been possible to obtain this information when you actually play a file. With this release, we have added a setting to allow all files to be scanned in the background. This is turned off by default, so check out the documentation for changes to see where this setting is and how to enable it.

Highlights of this releaseWe discovered a few issues with our 1.7 Final release which we addressed in this replacement, the 1.7.1 HotFix release. The most important change comes from a SubsystemVersion bump (MP.Externals.BASS to be specific).Attention Plugin developers! If your plugin references to the MP.Externals.BASS SubsystemVersion, your plugin will show up as incompatible as of the 1.7.1 HotFix release, and an updated version is needed.Besides the SubsystemVersion bump, we updated the Bass ASIO binary and fixed a possible crash if you ONLY installed the BassBox visualisations. There has also been some work done on the WMP visualisations. And last but not least, we fixed some potential freezes which were caused by using an obsolete Album View (Music) setting in Shares View.
Highlights of this releaseEnhanced TV experienceThe default protocol for LiveTV streaming on a multi-seat setup is RTSP. MediaPortal has an option to change this to UNC for those that experience problems with RTSP, but we've had a long long lasting issue with UNC paths, because of a Microsoft problem with the SMB2/3 cache. After a lot of work on the TsReader filter from our developer Owlsroost, we can now say that this 'known issue' is now solved, and the issues related to UNC paths should be fixed now!Music improvementsMediaPortal IconA number of things have been fixed in the Music section since our last release. We've reduced the CPU load coming from the AutoDJ function, fixed incorrect channel mappings for 3.0 and 4.0 music files, possible flickering visualisations and a sound loop when you have music playing in the background of a pictures slideshow.
