Besseres Scrolling für The Dig, Full Throttle und Curse of Monkey Island

Das ScummVM-Projekt hat es sich zur Aufgabe gemacht, vor allem alte LucasArts-Adventures auf aktuellen Rechnern und Betriebssystemen mittels einer plattformübergreifenden Virtual Machine zum Laufen zu bringen. Die Heiligabend veröffentlichte ScummVM-Version 0.7.0 bringt einiges Neues mit sich - darunter eine Unterstützung für weitere Nicht-LucasArts-Titel sowie für einige Macintosh-Versionen von LucasArts-Adventures.
  
Zu den 26 neu, aber größtenteils bisher nur rudimentär unterstützten Titeln zählen von Humongous Entertainment entwickelte Adventures und Lernspiele für jüngere Jahrgänge, etwa "Putt-Putt Goes To The Moon". Die unterstützten Mac-Versionen von auf LucasArts "Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion" (SCUMM) aufbauenden Spielen sollen nun direkt von der Original-CD gestartet werden können; das Tool "rescumm" soll damit weitgehend unnötig geworden sein.

SCUMM wurde von LucasArts für viele bekannte Adventures eingesetzt, auch für "Monkey Island", "Day of the Tentacle" und "Sam & Max". Für die SCUMM-Spiele "The Dig", "Full Throttle" und "Curse of Monkey Island" soll ScummVM 0.7.0 nun mit einem weichen horizontalen Scrolling aufwarten und damit der Ausgabe der Original-Engine entsprechen.

Weiterhin werden nun auch per FLAC verlustlos komprimierte Audio-Dateien in Spielen wiedergegeben, Gleiches gilt für die komprimierte Sprache und Musik in den Revolution-Software-Titeln Broken Sword 1 und 2. Außerdem wurden sehr viele Fehler behoben. Auf der offiziellen Website legt das ScummVM-Team deshalb Nutzern ein Update auf die neue Version dringend ans Herz.

ScummVM 0.7.0 wird bereits für Windows, MacOS X (10.2 und 10.3), die Red-Hat-Linux-Distribution Fedora Core, Solaris 8 für Sparc, BeOS, PalmOS und PocketPC zum Download angeboten. Der Quellcode steht unter der GNU GPL (General Public License) ebenfalls zum Download und zur Weiterverwendung zur Verfügung.

Wer gerne die Klassiker spielt ohne viel Grafikorgie usw. der kommt an SUMMVM nicht vorbei, vor allem auf Rechnern für welche die Spiele eigentlich nie erschienen sind.

Das ScummVM-Team hat Version 1.2.0 freigegeben. Eineinhalb Jahre nach der Vereinigung mit dem FreeSCI-Projekt stellt ScummVM nun einen universellen Interpreter für SCUMM-, AGI- und SCI-Spiele dar.

ScummVM begann als Interpreter für SCUMM-Dateien, aus denen Spiele von Lucas Arts bestehen. ScummVM ist daher eine Abkürzung für »Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion Virtual Machine«. Früher sehr populäre Spiele wie Monkey Island, Zak McKracken, Day of the Tentacle, Indiana Jones, Sam & Max oder Full Throttle beruhten auf diesem Format. Besitzer der Originaldateien können mit ScummVM die alten Spiele unter Linux und zahlreichen anderen Systemen wieder aufleben lassen. ScummVM wird unter den Bedingungen der GPL bereitgestellt.

Aufgrund der Vereinigung mit FreeSCI im Jahr 2009 unterstützt ScummVM nun auch die Sierra-Formate AGI und SCI. Die Liste der kompatiblen Spiele ist nach Angaben der Entwickler größer als zuletzt bei FreeSCI. Zudem können frühe SCI-Spiele, die nur mit 16 Farben liefen, ohne Dithering angezeigt werden, wodurch sie besser aussehen sollen.

Weitere neue Features sind Unterstützung für das Coktel-Vision-Spiel Fascination und neue Portierungen auf Android, Dingux, Caanoo und OpenPandora. Die Portierung auf PalmOS wurde aufgegeben. Eine der wichtigsten Neuerungen in dieser Version, die dem Projekt weitere Verbreitung bescheren könnte, ist die Internationalisierung der GUI von ScummVM. Übersetzungen liegen bereits in Katalanisch, Französisch, Deutsch, Italienisch, Russisch, Spanisch und Ukrainisch vor. Weitere Einzelheiten, überwiegend zu Korrekturen, enthalten die Hinweise zur Veröffentlichung.

   - Resolved multiple UI issues with the original save/load screen.
   - Added advanced savegame functionality, including savegame timestamps and
     thumbnails and the ability to load and delete savegames from the launcher.
     It's now possible to use the ScummvM save/load dialogs.
   - The F7 key (previously unmapped) now always shows the ScummVM load screen.
     The F10 key displays either the original save/load screen, or the ScummVM
     save screen, if the user has selected to use the ScummVM save/load
     dialogs.

  Dreamweb:
   - Now that the game is freeware, there is a small extra help text showing
     the available commands in the in-game terminals when the player uses the
     'help' command. Previously, players needed to consult the manual for the
     available commands. Since this reference to the manual is a form of copy
     protection, this extra line can be toggled by the ScummVM copy protection
     command line option.

  Groovie:
   - Simplified the movie speed options, and added a custom option for The 7th
     Guest. Movie options are now "normal" and "fast", with the latter changing
     the movie speed in T7G to match the faster movie speed of the iOS version.
     The game entry might need to be readded in the launcher for the new setting
     to appear.

  SAGA:
   - Added music support for the Macintosh version of I Have No Mouth and, I
     Must Scream.

  SCUMM:
   - Implemented Monkey Island 2 Macintosh's audio driver. Now we properly
     support its sample based audio output. The same output is also used for
     the m68k Macintosh version of Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis.
   - Improved music support for the Macintosh version of Monkey Island 1. It
     now uses the original instruments, rather than approximating them with
     General MIDI instruments, and should sound a lot closer to the original.
   - Added sound and music support for the Macintosh version of Loom.
   - Handle double-clicking in the Macintosh version of Loom.
   - Major bugfixes in INSANE (the Full Throttle bike fights).

ScummVM 2.0 mit 23 neuen Spielen

Das ScummVM-Team hat Version 2.0 freigegeben. Zu den Neuerungen der aktuellen Version des Spiele-Interpreters gehören unter anderem die Unterstützung von 23 neuen Spielen, darunter zahlreicher 32-Bit-Sierra-Abenteuerspielen und diverser Hi-Res-Spiele.

Mit der Freigabe der Version 2.0 ist nun die Zahl der unterstützten Titel weiter gestiegen. Wie die Entwickler bekannt gaben, wurde die Unterstützung fast aller 32-Bit-Sierra-Spiele komplettiert. Neu in der aktuellen Version des Spiele-Interpreters sind unter anderem »King's Quest VII«, »Leisure Suit Larry« 6 und 7 »Police Quest 4«, »Space Quest 6«, » Phantasmagoria« 1 und 2 und »Gabriel Knight« 1 und 2. Hinzukommen noch weitere Titel wie »Full Pipe« und die Hi-Res-Titel »Cranston Manor«, »Time Zone« und »The Dark Crystal«. Insgesamt unterstützt die neue Version 23 weitere Spiele.

Neben der erweiterten Spieleunterstützung bietet die neue Version auch diverse Verbesserungen und zahlreiche Korrekturen. Neu in der aktuellen Version ist unter anderem die Möglichkeit, die Sprache der Oberfläche ohne Neustart zu wechseln, eine aktualisierte MT-32-Emulation, verbesserte Joystick-Unterstützung und Verbesserungen bei der Audio-Wiedergabe. Eine neue Option scannt zudem ein ausgewähltes Verzeichnis nach unterstützten Spielen. Ferner wurden ScummVM weitere Portierungen auf PSP Vita und RISC OS hinzugefügt.

Weitere Änderungen liefert das ausführliche Changelog der neuen Version. ScummVM 2.0 kann ab sofort von der Seite des Projektes heruntergeladen werden. Detaillierte Informationen zu den unterstützten Titeln, samt dem Grad der Kompatibilität, liefert eine Auflistung der Seite des Projektes.
