Oracle hat die erste Beta-Version von VirtualBox 4.1 freigegeben. Zu den wichtigsten Neuerungen gegenüber der aktuellen Version 4.0.10 gehört die Möglichkeit, virtuelle Maschinen zu klonen. Auf 64-Bit-Hosts kann VirtualBox jetzt bis zu einem TByte RAM nutzen.

Der Wizard zum Anlegen neuer virtueller Platten wurde überarbeitet, ein neuer Wizard vereinfacht das Duplizieren virtueller Platten. Für Windows-Gäste steht jetzt ein experimenteller WDDM-Treiber (Windows Display Driver Model) zur Verfügung. Die Release Notes nennen weitere Neuerungen. VirtualBox 4.1 steht für Linux (32 und 64 Bit], Mac OS X, Solaris und Windows zum Download zur Verfügung.

Die neue Version 4.1 ist nach Angaben von Oracle ein größeres Update gegenüber Version 4.0. Zu den größten Änderungen gehört die Möglichkeit, virtuelle Maschinen zu klonen, was bisher nur mit Mühe möglich war, da die Software keine virtuellen Laufwerke mit identischen UUIDs akzeptierte. Vollständige Klone können über die GUI und das Programm VBoxManage erzeugt werden, verkettete Klone nur mit VBoxManage.

Die grafische Oberfläche des Produktes wurde durch einen verbesserten Wizard zum Erstellen von neuen virtuellen Laufwerken und einen neuen Wizard zum Kopieren von virtuellen Laufwerken erweitert. 64-Bit-Hostrechner können virtuellen Maschinen nun bis zu 1 TB RAM zuweisen. Für Linux-Hosts wurde Unterstützung für PCI-Passthrough implementiert, allerdings momentan noch experimentell.

Windows-Gastsysteme können nun einen ebenfalls experimentellen WDDM-Grafiktreiber nutzen, der Direct3D sauberer unterstützt und einfacher einzurichten ist. Ebenfalls experimentell ist die Unterstützung für die Hotplug-Funktionalität von SATA-Festplatten. Der Status von Modulen und Features der Gasterweiterungen kann nun von den Frontends separat abgefragt werden.

Die Entwickler implementierten einen neuen Netzwerk-Verbindungstyp »Generic Driver«, der den Zugang zu einer offenen Plugin-Architektur darstellt, über die beliebige, unabhängig entwickelte und vertriebene virtuelle Netze implementiert werden können. Ein weiterer neuer Netzwerk-Verbindungstyp »UDP Tunnel« ermöglicht es, virtuelle Maschinen, die auf unterschiedlichen Hostsystemen laufen, einfach und transparent zu verbinden.

Virtualbox 4.1 ist für viele Linux-Distributionen als Binärpaket verfügbar, darüber hinaus finden sich im Downloadbereich auch Pakete für Mac OS X, Solaris, MS Windows, die Quelltexte, ein SDK sowie zugehörige Anleitungen.

Kernel-Treiber von VirtualBox in der Kritik

Die Qualität des Kernel-Treibers von VirtualBox, einer von Oracle übernommenen Virtualisierungs-Software, ist in die Kritik einiger Kernel-Entwickler geraten.

VirtualBox ist eine von der deutschen Firma Innotek entwickelte virtuelle Maschine für 32-Bit- und 64-Bit-x86-Systeme. Durch die Übernahme von Sun, das Innotek gekauft hatte, gelangte VirtualBox an Oracle, wo es wie schon bei Sun rasch weiterentwickelt wird. Zur Beschleunigung der Ausführung von virtuellen Maschinen setzt VirtualBox eigene Linux-Kernel-Treiber ein.

Diese Treiber wurden jetzt Gegenstand der Kritik, als der für Red Hat arbeitende Kernel-Entwickler Dave Jones einen Patch vorschlug, der den Kernel automatisch mit dem Taint-Flag markiert, wenn das vboxdrv-Modul geladen wird. Dieses Flag sagt den Kernel-Entwicklern, dass sie Fehlerberichte für solch einen Kernel gar nicht weiter zu untersuchen brauchen, da der fragliche Kernel proprietäre oder experimentelle Module enthält. Laut Jones liegen Red Hat und Fedora so viele Fehlerberichte zum VirtualBox-Treiber vor, dass es lästig wird. Diese Fehler deuten auf Speicherkorruption hin, wie sie typischerweise durch fehlerhaften Umgang mit Zeigern oder Pufferüberläufe verursacht wird.

Jones will infolgedessen den Treiber, der von Oracle außerhalb des Kernels entwickelt wird, so behandeln wie Treiber im Staging-Bereich des Kernels; das entsprechende Flag heißt TAINT_CRAP. Andere Kernel-Entwickler, darunter Greg Kroah-Hartman, unterstützen die Idee prinzipiell, allerdings gibt es noch unterschiedliche Ansichten, wie das Modul genau markiert werden soll.

Die Initiative könnte aber auch als Mahnung an die Entwickler des Treibers dienen. Dr.-Ing. Frank Mehnert vom VirtualBox-Team hat sich bereits zu Wort gemeldet und um nähere Informationen gebeten. Nachdem er kurz die von Jones angegebenen Hinweise betrachtet hatte, meldete er sich zurück mit der Ansicht, dass viele der vermeintlichen Fehlerberichte »ganz klar« nicht vom VirtualBox-Treiber verursacht sein können. Der Treiber sei in diesen Fällen lediglich geladen gewesen. Mehnert will der Sache weiter nachgehen. Das bisher gute Verhältnis zu den Kernel-Entwicklern soll durch die Sache nicht getrübt werden und die Zusammenarbeit mit den Kernel-Entwicklern weiterhin gut bleiben oder verbessert werden. Eine Aufnahme des Treibers in den offiziellen Kernel scheint dagegen nicht geplant zu sein, da sich das Team bei Oracle Änderungen der Programmierschnittstelle jederzeit vorbehalten will.
